Soap for Hope is a program of Disaster Aid Canada that began in Victoria two years ago to help shelters and marginalized people in the community. Our organization’s mission is to provide humanitarian aid, shelter, sustainable water systems and hygiene products to people affected by natural and other disasters; or with compelling local need. The Soap for Hope program, in particular, focuses on fulfilling the hygiene needs of communities locally and abroad.
Soap for hope achieves this goal by collecting gently used or unused soap and hygiene products from the hotel industry and the public that would otherwise be discarded. Our volunteers reprocess these items to distribute to those in need. Some of these soaps and shampoos are also used in international projects and disaster situations in our Disaster Aid Relief Kits while the majority of it stays right here on Vancouver Island.
The program is not only diverting hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles from landfills but also fulfilling a local and international need for hygiene products, helping people stay healthy and dignified. Last year alone, Soap for Hope serviced over 30 local shelters, 19 international projects, and 30 different hotels.
