SUMMARY:Builders of the Dunsmuir Legacy
DESCRIPTION:On September 30\, 1890\, the Vancouver World reported that Joan Dunsmuir had moved into her new $500\,000 residence. Craigdarroch Castle’s scale and grandeur were unprecedented in Victoria\, inspiring admiration for its craftsmanship while drawing attention to the wealth and power it so boldly displayed. Although scores of city dwellers worked on the construction project\, many key tradesmen came from elsewhere. Several remained in Victoria\, building their reputations on the skills showcased at Craigdarroch. Drawing on research from the book\, Craigdarroch Reconstructed\, castle curator Jenny Seeman will introduce us to some of the architects\, contractors\, and craftsmen behind the iconic Dunsmuir homes that still shape Victoria’s skyline.

SUMMARY:Solastalgia: Poetry and Prose Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join RAVEN\, in partnership with Urban Ink\, for the next instalments of our Solastalgia Community Event Series. \n\n\n\n\nThis series has had so much interest and requests to host in other cities\, so to answer that call\, the next two sessions will be taking place in Vancouver\, B.C. \nThis chapter of the series will explore the theme of Ecosystems of Care. We’ll consider the relationships and practices within communities that sustain us through times of ecological and social change. Together\, we will reflect on how care flows between people\, land\, water\, more-than-human kin\, and future generations. And we’ll ask ourselves what it means to nurture resilience in an era of climate uncertainty. \nFor this session\, on August 16\, 2026\, there will be a Solastalgia-themed poetry and prose workshop facilitated by natasha gauthier\, a mixed settler and reconnecting Indigenous multidisciplinary writer and visual artist. Through guided writing prompts\, reflection\, and discussion\, participants will explore their relationship to place\, climate change\, grief\, belonging\, and collective care. Whether you’re an experienced writer or simply curious about writing your thoughts out\, this workshop will offer a welcoming space to connect with others and express what it means to live in a changing world. \nGet your tickets for the poetry and prose workshop now! \nLocation: Jim Green House Studio\, 1885 Venables St\, Vancouver\, BC \nAccessibility: The Studio space is the lower level of the heritage home\, accessible from the ground floor. It is slightly elevated; however\, there is a ramp down from the main door. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.ca/e/solastalgia-poetry-and-prose-workshop-tickets-1993026711545

SUMMARY:Dog Walk for Wolves
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Victoria on International Wolf Day for a dog walk with a purpose – Come and learn more about the importance of BC wolves and the threats they face. \n\n\nHosted by Pacific Wild\, this free\, family-friendly event explores the existing link between dogs and their closest living relatives. \nMeet us at the Cameron Bandshell in Beacon Hill Park with your pup (or just yourself!) for pre-walk activities such as a wolf howl competition with a fun prize for the winner\, a photo booth for you and your furry friends\, a sign making station to show your support for the conservation of B.C. wolves\, and an information booth where you can learn more about the B.C. wolf cull. \nWe will walk together at 6:15pm from Beacon Hill Park to the Legislative Fountain for a group photo\, including a quick stop at the Victoria Centennial Fountain to visit the Bronze Wolf statue. \nBring your dog. Learn about his or her wild K9 cousin. Wolves hold ecosystems together — and right now\, they’re being killed by government programs and under-regulated hunting and trapping. One walk at a time\, our community of dog lovers can help change that.

SUMMARY:Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:As the environmental crisis accelerates\, artists around the world are responding with urgency\, insight and vision. Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change is the first major exhibition in Canada to examine the intersection of the climate crisis and contemporary art on a global scale. \nFeaturing works from the past 25 years\, this exhibition underscores the urgency and relevance of sustainability and the environment as defining issues of our time. More than 35 works across a range of media—from large-scale video installations to living sculptures—invite viewers to confront pressing questions about our shared future on this planet. \nPresented across multiple floors\, Future Geographies includes a newly commissioned work by Jeffrey Gibson and marks the first time several artists are exhibiting in Vancouver\, including Teresita Fernández\, Josh Kline\, Cannupa Hanska Luger\, Jean Shin and Clarissa Tossin. The exhibition also features major works by BC–based artists such as Brian Jungen\, Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill and Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun\, connecting global issues with local specificity. Together\, the works in this exhibition invite dialogue and create space for imagining. \nIn conjunction with the exhibition\, the Vancouver Art Gallery is partnering with the University of British Columbia Climate Action Lab to create unique platforms for cross disciplinary dialogue. After its presentation at the Vancouver Art Gallery\, Future Geographies will travel to the Art Gallery of Ontario. \nFuture Geographies will continue on the Gallery’s 4th Floor with the immersive installation SANCTUARY: The Ancient Forest Experience\, by Dr. T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss\, Damien Gillis and Olivier Leroux\, and a presentation of cedar works by local artists\, curated by Dr. Wyss. Find out more » \nA public artwork by Cannupa Hanska Luger will be featured on a billboard on 1611 E Hastings Street (near Commercial Drive) and is a collaboration with Capture Photography Festival. Find out more » \nThe Gallery has partnered with Canada’s National Observer to present Future Geographies online\, extending the exhibition to audiences worldwide.

SUMMARY:UJAM Summer Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:The UJAM Summer Concert Series returns to UVic’s Phillip T. Young Recital Hall with three nights of exceptional jazz\, presented by the UJAM Summer Jazz Workshop\, a five day intensive led by some of the finest jazz educators in Victoria. Each night offers a double bill drawn from the workshop faculty and friends\, an intimate window into the artistry behind the teaching. \nTuesday opens the series with a rising talent: Stella White\, an 18-year-old DownBeat Award-winning vocalist studying jazz performance at McGill under Camille Thurman\, brings a soulful sensibility shaped by Sarah Vaughan\, Carmen McRae\, and Jazzmeia Horn. She’s followed by Juno-nominated saxophonist Ryan Oliver\, a Western Canadian Music Awards “Jazz Musician of the Year” nominee who has toured the globe with The Shuffle Demons and co-leads The Cookers Quintet. \nWednesday brings a Core Faculty Showcase\, gathering the workshop’s instrumentalists for a freewheeling collaborative set\, followed by celebrated singer-composer Brian Tate. A two-time Jessie Richardson Award winner and founder of Vancouver’s 100-voice City Soul Choir\, Tate’ s choral works are published and performed worldwide\, and his solo performances bring decades of genre-spanning artistry to the stage. \nThursday closes the series with a double bill of remarkable range. Vancouver-born vocalist and pianist Jennifer Scott\, who has shared stages with Clark Terry\, Kenny Wheeler\, Tommy Banks\, and Jon Batiste\, joins her husband\, bassist Rene Worst\, a virtuoso whose credits span Chet Baker\, David Bowie\, and Aerosmith and who co-founded the Juno-nominated band Skywalk. They’re followed by multi-instrumentalist John Lee\, a Berklee-trained Cellar Live recording artist who made his New York debut with Cyrus Chestnut at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and has since shared the stage with George Colligan\, Terell Stafford\, and Ingrid Jensen. \nURL:\nTickets: https://go.evvnt.com/3725360-0?pid=10320 \nDate and Time: On Tue\, 11 Aug 2026 19:00 – Tue\, 11 Aug 2026 22:00 \nVenue details: Phillip T. SUMMARY:Love to Sing!!!!!! The Victoria Arion Male Choir Invitation to January 2026 Open Houses
DESCRIPTION:The Victoria Arion Male Choir: Tradition and Community \nAbout the Choir\nThe Victoria Arion Male Choir represents one of the newest additions to the vibrant choral scene in Victoria\, BC. Formed in the summer of 2018\, the choir is the result of the union between two long-standing ensembles: the Arion Male Voice Choir\, established in 1892\, and the Victoria Male Voice Choir\, founded in 1907. Both groups recognized the opportunity to better pursue their vision of creating “a community of men singing for health and joy” by coming together as one. This merger has proven to be a dynamic and successful venture\, yielding positive results both musically and organizationally. \nOur Mission\nThe choir is dedicated to sustaining the rich tradition of male-voice choral music. Each year\, members share their passion for music through a minimum of two public concerts\, as well as performances at seniors’ residences\, the Victoria Remembrance Day ceremony\, and other community events. In support of music education\, the Victoria Arion Male Choir offers a choral scholarship program\, inviting up to four student musicians annually to join and perform with the group. New members are always welcome to experience the camaraderie and joy of choral singing. \nLeadership\nUnder the direction of Musical Director Sean Lampard-Quicke\, who joined the choir in 2020\, and the accompaniment of collaborative pianist Jennifer Mitchell\, a member since 2019\, the choir continues to thrive and evolve. \nMembership and Rehearsals\nThe Victoria Arion Male Choir is actively seeking new singers for its non-audition choir\, beginning in January 2026. Open houses will be held on Mondays\, January 5th\, 12th\, and 19th; rehearsals start at 7:00 p.m. each Monday.  at Cordova Bay United Church\, located at 813 Claremont Ave. The choir performs four-part harmony\, with a diverse repertoire that includes classical\, spiritual\, folk\, and contemporary selections. Additionally\, the choir welcomes applications for its choral scholar program. \nFor those interested in joining as a new member or learning more about the choral scholar program\, please contact Jim Johnson at jimmysj@shaw.ca or visit the choir’s website at www.vamc.ca. \n

SUMMARY:Norman Morison: Victoria’s Mayflower — Part II
DESCRIPTION:The Hudson Bay Company-owned ship Norman Morison made three voyages (1850\, 1851\, 1853) from Great Britain to Victoria. The third voyage was the HBC’s first attempt to introduce settlers. It included many families who entered five-year indentured commitments to the HBC in return for their own land. As these settlers became the early core of the Capital Region\, the Norman Morison can be considered our Mayflower. Mike Woodcock will build on last year’s tour by taking us to the graves and highlighting the stories of more of these early passengers. The tour will finish at the grave site of a notable Norman Morison passenger where a new grave marker has been installed.
