DESCRIPTION:Course description\nInvasive species are highly successful species often dispersed by people\, frequently transported by commercial or recreational activities. In this course we’ll examine the biology of invasive species\, focusing on the life-history adaptations and dispersal strategies that contribute to their success at both the individual and population levels. \nUpon completing the course\, you’ll be able to: \n\nidentify common invasive species\ndescribe their distributions\, life cycles\, growth habits\, reproductive characteristics and adaptation\n\nYou’ll also learn about control options including preventative\, cultural\, biological and chemical control methods. \nFinally\, you’ll explore novel ecosystems that are created when invasive species insert themselves into the fabric of natural ecosystems\, and the problems they pose to traditional approaches to ecosystem management such as when an endangered species becomes dependent on an invasive species for its survival. \nFormat\nOnline format over a 14-week period\, requiring approximately 10 hours of coursework per week.

DESCRIPTION:Registration is open for summer arts workshops at Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts at Pearson College! This year we are offering 34\, 2 and 5 day workshops for adults\, and 3 residency opportunities. This years course offerings include many workshops in ceramics\, fibre arts\, drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, writing\, printing and design\, with students and faculty travelling form around the world to attend\, and many returning alumni looking forward to seeing their MISSA community. Maybe you know someone who would be intersted in attending? missa.ca/workshops \n  \nMetchosin International Summer School of the Arts – ‘MISSA’ was founded in 1984 at Pearson College by 5 local artists\, Robin Hopper (ceramics)\, Carole Sabiston (fibre arts)\, Cheryl Samuel (weaving)\, Flemming Jorgensen (painting)\, and Rona Murray (writing).  In the first year’s program there were 5 classes and 53 students. Since that time our program has flourished\, and this year we anticipate over 300 students. There are accommodations on campus\, including breakfast and dinner\, and the workshop fees include lunch. Pearson College is an ideal location for our creative community to gather\, learn and enjoy meeting new old friends. DESCRIPTION:As the environmental crisis accelerates\, artists around the world are responding with urgency\, insight and vision. Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change is the first major exhibition in Canada to examine the intersection of the climate crisis and contemporary art on a global scale. \nFeaturing works from the past 25 years\, this exhibition underscores the urgency and relevance of sustainability and the environment as defining issues of our time. More than 35 works across a range of media—from large-scale video installations to living sculptures—invite viewers to confront pressing questions about our shared future on this planet. \nPresented across multiple floors\, Future Geographies includes a newly commissioned work by Jeffrey Gibson and marks the first time several artists are exhibiting in Vancouver\, including Teresita Fernández\, Josh Kline\, Cannupa Hanska Luger\, Jean Shin and Clarissa Tossin. The exhibition also features major works by BC–based artists such as Brian Jungen\, Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill and Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun\, connecting global issues with local specificity. Together\, the works in this exhibition invite dialogue and create space for imagining. \nIn conjunction with the exhibition\, the Vancouver Art Gallery is partnering with the University of British Columbia Climate Action Lab to create unique platforms for cross disciplinary dialogue. DESCRIPTION:Attention outdoor enthusiasts! There’s a great opportunity to get outside and help nature at the 2026 Big Backyard BioBlitz. Nature Conservancy Canada began this annual endeavour to involve the public in improving species distribution modelling maps. Simply take photos or record audio\, then upload the files on the iNaturalist app to contribute valuable species location data. And this year\, you can take part in the BioBlitz around the wetland on the Sooke Region Museum’s grounds! \nMembers of the public wishing to participate at the museum must first attend an orientation session on Saturday 25 July at 10am. There\, ecologist Stacey Kinder will teach about protecting this sensitive ecosystem. Two days later\, on Monday 27 July\, you can bring your smartphone or camera and begin exploring! \nPlease pre-register for the orientation session by emailing events@sookeregionmuseum.ca. SUMMARY:Seed Saving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to grow\, harvest\, clean and store seeds with the knowledgeable Rebecca Jehn at Welland Orchard \n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop Description\nIn this workshop we will begin by discussing each participant’s farming and seed saving experience and top goals for this workshop\, before launching into learning how to grow\, harvest\, clean and store seeds. \nWe will also talk about seed history and biology\, look at and talk about equipment used for cleaning and processing seed and have a hands on demo of cleaning and processing of seed heads supplied by a local farmer. \nThis workshop will finish with a question and answer period to make sure nothing is missed\, as well a chance to peruse some of the books in Rebecca’s collection. \nThe formal part of this workshop will run from 10am-12pm. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch with them and continue the conversation about seed saving\, ask additional questions and have more time to look though the books from 12pm-1pm \nBe sure to come dressed for the elements as this workshop will be held outdoors. \nGetting here\nAs there is limited parking available at the orchard\, please bike\, walk\, bus or carpool if possible. We are located right on the galloping goose\, and you are welcome to bring bikes into the orchard to lock them up safely. \nIf you are driving\, there are 8 parking spots located at the end of stancil lane\, 1 of which will be reserved as accessible for the duration of the workshop. Please be mindful of our neighbours and do not park in the large driveway on the south side of the street. Additional parking can be found along the street on High St and Eaton Ave. \nAbout the Instructor\nRebecca Jehn farmed in the Greater Victoria area for over 35 years\, growing produce\, seeds and bedding plants for sale at the Moss Street Market\, as well as making and selling preserves from her produce. She began saving seeds when she noticed some of her favorite varieties were disappearing from the seed catalogs and she didn’t want to lose the ability to grow those varieties which often tasted better and were usually hardier.She only grew open pollinated seeds most of them heirloom varieties. Her main focus has been to share her knowledge\, teaching workshops and seminars on growing\, harvesting and preserving techniques as well as mentoring potential young farmers on the business and marketing aspects of farming. When she began saving seed it was mostly for farm use and friends but soon realized that seeds grown locally become adapted to localconditions\, producing better than others so she decided to share her seed with the local population and shortly after Rebecca’s Garden Seeds was born. Now after more than 35 years of farming Rebecca has retired but still wants to share her experience and knowledge with other farmers and backyard gardeners. Helping with food security and preserving our seed knowledge for future generations. \n\nHow to Register for this Event\nThis workshop is in person only. Please dress appropriately for all types of weather\, as the workshop will be hosted outside in the orchard. \nThis workshop is available on a sliding scale basis. The steepness of the path varies throughout the Orchard and is steepest at the top of the Orchard closer to the Stancil Lane entrance\, and at the bottom between the Galloping Goose trail and the Orchard entrance. The pathway from the Galloping Goose to the entrance to the Orchard has several sharp turns. \nThe Orchard has a single-stall gender-neutral composting toilet facility on site with ramp access and transfer bars which will be open during the workshop. The composting toilet is located below the flat area and toward the Galloping Goose entrance. Hand sanitizer is available inside the toilet. \nThe workshop will be held outside rain or shine\, please dress appropriately for the weather. The seating provided is picnic benches. Please feel free to bring a cushion or your own folding chair\, a limited number of cushions are available at the orchard. \nThere is access to potable water on site. DESCRIPTION:The Victoria Arion Male Choir: Tradition and Community \nAbout the Choir\nThe Victoria Arion Male Choir represents one of the newest additions to the vibrant choral scene in Victoria\, BC. Formed in the summer of 2018\, the choir is the result of the union between two long-standing ensembles: the Arion Male Voice Choir\, established in 1892\, and the Victoria Male Voice Choir\, founded in 1907. Both groups recognized the opportunity to better pursue their vision of creating “a community of men singing for health and joy” by coming together as one. This merger has proven to be a dynamic and successful venture\, yielding positive results both musically and organizationally. \nOur Mission\nThe choir is dedicated to sustaining the rich tradition of male-voice choral music. Each year\, members share their passion for music through a minimum of two public concerts\, as well as performances at seniors’ residences\, the Victoria Remembrance Day ceremony\, and other community events. In support of music education\, the Victoria Arion Male Choir offers a choral scholarship program\, inviting up to four student musicians annually to join and perform with the group. New members are always welcome to experience the camaraderie and joy of choral singing. \nLeadership\nUnder the direction of Musical Director Sean Lampard-Quicke\, who joined the choir in 2020\, and the accompaniment of collaborative pianist Jennifer Mitchell\, a member since 2019\, the choir continues to thrive and evolve. \nMembership and Rehearsals\nThe Victoria Arion Male Choir is actively seeking new singers for its non-audition choir\, beginning in January 2026. Open houses will be held on Mondays\, January 5th\, 12th\, and 19th; rehearsals start at 7:00 p.m. each Monday.  at Cordova Bay United Church\, located at 813 Claremont Ave. The choir performs four-part harmony\, with a diverse repertoire that includes classical\, spiritual\, folk\, and contemporary selections. DESCRIPTION:Creative Cottage Camp\n\nIf your kids enjoy visiting the Sooke Region Museum for school tours\, they’ll LOVE our summer camp! \nFor 2 weeks\, kids will participate in skill-building workshops in the mornings with theatrical and musical activities in the afternoons. Outdoor time and games included – all on the grounds and in the historic buildings of the Sooke Region Museum. \nMornings will be filled with skill-building activities\, while the afternoons will focus on music and theatre.\nSkill building will focus on homesteading – like the people who lived in Moss Cottage – making butter\, bread\, jam\, sewing. These are life skills just as important today as they were in 1902! Learning to source materials locally\, we will practice reducing waste and experience how historical skills are relevant to modern-day life. \nPerformance exercises and activities will be led by Katrina Kadoski in the afternoons. With her extensive acting and music experience\, Katrina will show participants how to embody their characters informed by the morning’s historical skill building activities. Have you ever used a washboard as a musical instrument? \nOn the last day of the two-week camp the children will perform a bit of what they’ve learned and created. \nFor the best experience\, camp will be limited to maximum 10 children. Each night offers a double bill drawn from the workshop faculty and friends\, an intimate window into the artistry behind the teaching. \nTuesday opens the series with a rising talent: Stella White\, an 18-year-old DownBeat Award-winning vocalist studying jazz performance at McGill under Camille Thurman\, brings a soulful sensibility shaped by Sarah Vaughan\, Carmen McRae\, and Jazzmeia Horn. She’s followed by Juno-nominated saxophonist Ryan Oliver\, a Western Canadian Music Awards “Jazz Musician of the Year” nominee who has toured the globe with The Shuffle Demons and co-leads The Cookers Quintet. \nWednesday brings a Core Faculty Showcase\, gathering the workshop’s instrumentalists for a freewheeling collaborative set\, followed by celebrated singer-composer Brian Tate. A two-time Jessie Richardson Award winner and founder of Vancouver’s 100-voice City Soul Choir\, Tate’ s choral works are published and performed worldwide\, and his solo performances bring decades of genre-spanning artistry to the stage. \nThursday closes the series with a double bill of remarkable range.
