SUMMARY:Casey and Diana
DESCRIPTION:“Casey” is Casey House in Toronto-Canada’s first hospice for men dying of AIDS. “Diana” is Princess Diana-who visited Casey House in 1991-and changed the world’s attitude towards the disease. Thomas has spent five months in Casey House waiting to die. Now he’s hoping he’ll live long enough to meet the Princess he idolizes. \nWhy I Chose This Play\nAs a gay man\, I lived through this horrific time-so much fear and so little information. We heard stories of hospital staff too frightened to deliver meals to AIDS patients (which was actually the impetus behind the founding of Casey House). Thomas in this play reminds me of so many men who contracted this disease\, facing death with a mixture of anger and sadness-and a helluva lot of snap and flair-! Michael Shamata \nThis production of Casey and Diana is supported in part by a generous gift from Elaine Montgomery and Robert Maitland \nTicket Prices\nPart of your 2025-26 Season Subscription Package All tickets to this show are offered with Pay-What-You-Can Price Options \nURLs:\nFacebook: https://go.evvnt.com/3555250-2?pid=10320\nInstagram: https://go.evvnt.com/3555250-3?pid=10320\nYouTube: https://go.evvnt.com/3555250-4?pid=10320 \nDate and Time: Tue\, 21 Apr 2026 19:30 – Sun\, 17 May 2026 21:30 \nVenue details: Belfry Theatre\, 1291 Gladstone Avenue\, Victoria\, British Columbia\, V8T 2Y5\, Canada \n  \nCategory: Arts | Performing Arts | Theatre \nPrice:\nAssigned Seating: CAD 60.00

SUMMARY:Love to Sing!!!!!! The Victoria Arion Male Choir Invitation to January 2026 Open Houses
DESCRIPTION:The Victoria Arion Male Choir: Tradition and Community \nAbout the Choir\nThe Victoria Arion Male Choir represents one of the newest additions to the vibrant choral scene in Victoria\, BC. Formed in the summer of 2018\, the choir is the result of the union between two long-standing ensembles: the Arion Male Voice Choir\, established in 1892\, and the Victoria Male Voice Choir\, founded in 1907. Both groups recognized the opportunity to better pursue their vision of creating “a community of men singing for health and joy” by coming together as one. This merger has proven to be a dynamic and successful venture\, yielding positive results both musically and organizationally. \nOur Mission\nThe choir is dedicated to sustaining the rich tradition of male-voice choral music. Each year\, members share their passion for music through a minimum of two public concerts\, as well as performances at seniors’ residences\, the Victoria Remembrance Day ceremony\, and other community events. In support of music education\, the Victoria Arion Male Choir offers a choral scholarship program\, inviting up to four student musicians annually to join and perform with the group. New members are always welcome to experience the camaraderie and joy of choral singing. \nLeadership\nUnder the direction of Musical Director Sean Lampard-Quicke\, who joined the choir in 2020\, and the accompaniment of collaborative pianist Jennifer Mitchell\, a member since 2019\, the choir continues to thrive and evolve. \nMembership and Rehearsals\nThe Victoria Arion Male Choir is actively seeking new singers for its non-audition choir\, beginning in January 2026. Open houses will be held on Mondays\, January 5th\, 12th\, and 19th; rehearsals start at 7:00 p.m. each Monday.  at Cordova Bay United Church\, located at 813 Claremont Ave. The choir performs four-part harmony\, with a diverse repertoire that includes classical\, spiritual\, folk\, and contemporary selections. Additionally\, the choir welcomes applications for its choral scholar program. \nFor those interested in joining as a new member or learning more about the choral scholar program\, please contact Jim Johnson at jimmysj@shaw.ca or visit the choir’s website at www.vamc.ca. \n

SUMMARY:Invasive Species and Novel Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Course description\nInvasive species are highly successful species often dispersed by people\, frequently transported by commercial or recreational activities. In this course we’ll examine the biology of invasive species\, focusing on the life-history adaptations and dispersal strategies that contribute to their success at both the individual and population levels. \nUpon completing the course\, you’ll be able to: \n\nidentify common invasive species\ndescribe their distributions\, life cycles\, growth habits\, reproductive characteristics and adaptation\n\nYou’ll also learn about control options including preventative\, cultural\, biological and chemical control methods. \nFinally\, you’ll explore novel ecosystems that are created when invasive species insert themselves into the fabric of natural ecosystems\, and the problems they pose to traditional approaches to ecosystem management such as when an endangered species becomes dependent on an invasive species for its survival. \nFormat\nOnline format over a 14-week period\, requiring approximately 10 hours of coursework per week.

SUMMARY:Let’s Talk Heat - A Dialogue to Help Launch a BC Heat Collaborative
DESCRIPTION:Extreme heat is an increasing danger for residents of B.C. and much needs to be done. Several heat-focused groups in BC are taking steps to initiate a Heat Collaborative. This initiative seeks to take a cross-sectional approach in advocating for livable temperatures for all. We are bringing together a diverse cross-section of individuals and groups engaging or concerned with heat in some aspect of their interest\, work or membership. \nPlease register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/E0qkViDfT8CB-nCeVyZ1cA. \nTo help launch the Heat Collaborative – we want to hear your heat stories.\nOn May 6\, 2026\, we will be having small group discussions about how you have experienced heat issues in your community and place of work and what solutions we all need to achieve safer communities. We will then hear about some of the work currently being done to address the issues and what gaps remain.\nTo close\, we will ask participants to respond to a short questionnaire about their interests and messages for the Heat Collaborative to be an effective vehicle for livable temperatures for all. \nFacebook event page to share: https://www.facebook.com/share/1BEHE9ewpr/

SUMMARY:The Future of Honest Questioning
DESCRIPTION:The Humanist Cafe\nDiscussion Forum \n Free* And Open To All! \n \nWednesday May 6\, 2026 – 7:00-8:30 pm\n Cook Street Activity Center\n 380 Cook St. (Cook St. Village)\, Victoria\n \nLimited free parking and free street parking\n\nPlease Use The Side Entrance (beside the construction site)\n Purchase Coffee/Tea nearby at The Moka House – BYO mug! \n \n  \n* * * *\n  \nTopic – The Future of Honest Questioning\nPresenter:  Barrie Webster\nThe ability to question and the very act of questioning is fundamental to the humanistic life stance. But there are pitfalls for those daring to ask questions in today’s world. Ric Esther Bienstock’s recent essay in the Opinion section of the Saturday Globe and Mail ago expressed her concern: “Self-censorship has become the safest form of expression.” [see attachment below – the Globe and Mail is behind a paywall] \nAs Bienstock states\, “a generation [is] being taught that disagreement is harm.” Further\, university students and professors she spoke to told her that “they had abandoned certain lines of inquiry altogether fearing professional or social consequences.” As she says\, “when honest questions get reframed as instruments of oppression\, something essential is lost: the ability to disagree.” \n“Universities exist to teach people how to think\, not what to think. When we tell a generation that ‘disagreement is violence’\, that ‘discomfort is harm’\, that ‘the correct response to an idea you find threatening is to make sure nobody else hears it’\, we don’t protect them. We weaken them.” “…once we decide that some ideas are too dangerous to hear\, we have already conceded the argument to the people who would silence us.” \nOne of the key aspects of this problem is the lazy way of thinking known as binary reasoning. This either-or approach often leads to flawed\, oversimplified\, and judgmental conclusions and decision making. In binary thinking\, there is no room for nuance or accommodation of detail. Things are either black or white. \nMost decision making includes consideration of more than one variable (or should). Critical thinking helps us deal with and evaluate the importance of these variables. \nhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_thinking \nIt is perhaps useful to consider the analysis of this situation in the university context. \nIn 2014\, President Robert J Zimmer and Provost Eric D Isaacs at the University of Chicago appointed The Committee on Freedom of Expression to draft a statement “articulating the University’s overarching commitment to free\, robust\, and uninhibited debate and deliberation among all members of the University’s community.” \nhttps://provost.uchicago.edu/sites/default/files/documents/reports/FOECommitteeReport.pdf \nThey stated that “…education should not be intended to make people comfortable; it is meant to make them think. Universities should be expected to provide the conditions within which hard thought\, and therefore strong disagreement\, independent judgment\, and the questioning of stubborn assumptions\, can flourish in an environment of the greatest freedom.” \n“But it is not the proper role of the University to attempt to shield individuals from ideas and opinions they find unwelcome\, disagreeable\, or even deeply offensive. Although the University greatly values civility\, and although all members of the University community share in the responsibility for maintaining a climate of mutual respect\, concerns about civility and mutual respect can never be used as a justification for closing off discussion of ideas\, however offensive or disagreeable those ideas may be to some members of our community.” \nSo back to the concerns expressed by Bienstock in her essay. \nQuestions: \n1. What are the implications for modern society? \n2. What role if any do colonialism and racism play in determining what questioning is respectable\, particularly in an educational setting? \n3. How do today’s humanists need to proceed to defend the right to challenge the assumptions and conventions of Canadians? Of anyone? \n\nSee you there!  Bring a questioning friend.\n* Donations gratefully accepted\nwww.vsha.ca

SUMMARY:Where the Light Gets In: Why Canada's Global Engagement Matters
DESCRIPTION:Fulford Hall 7:30PM Saturday June 6th \n\nTickets available HERE\n\nDuring this time of global crisis\, few Canadians have had a closer view of the world’s faultlines than Bob Rae. The former Ambassador to the United Nations spent the past five years at the very heart of global diplomacy\, where some of the most consequential decisions affecting humanity are made. \nBob Rae brought four decades of hard-fought political experience to the United Nations. He’d been an NDP Member of Parliament\, the Premier of Ontario\, and the interim leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. He’d also done important work on Indigenous issues and human rights\, giving him a rare blend of moral clarity and political realism. \n  \nBob Rae represented Canada at the United Nations through the COVID-19 pandemic\, the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, the October 7\, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and the subsequent war in Gaza. Again and again\, his principled voice was heard in the highest corridors of power\, helping Canada make a difference on the world stage. \n  \nPlease join the Salt Spring Forum in an informed\, sobering but ultimately optimistic conversation with one of Canada’s greatest statesmen\, the remarkable\, irrepressible Bob Rae. \n  \n  \nTickets are still available HERE for Alex Neve: 2025 CBC Massey Lecturer\nFulford Hall.  7:30pm Wednesday May 13th\nPlease visit the Forum website to preview and purchase tickets for our upcoming events.\nThe Salt Spring Forum is grateful for the sponsorship provided by Ganges Village Marketplace and Island Savings and for the continued support of Harbour House Hotel\, Auntie Pesto’s and Harbour Air.
