SUMMARY:Women Of The Fur Trade
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Kathleen MacLean\nSet in “eighteen hundred and something”\, three very different women with a preference for 21st-century slang sit in a fort on the banks of the Reddish River\, sharing their views on life\, love\, and that hot nerd Louis Riel (“He is SO dreamy…the total package!”)\nIn this lively historical satire of survival and cultural inheritance\, playwright Frances Koncan shifts perspectives from the male gaze onto women’s power-in the past and present-through the lens of the rapidly changing world of the Canadian fur trade.\nWHY WE CHOSE THIS PLAY\nWe are captivated by the way that Koncan’s irreverent and witty comedy looks at Indigenous history through a modern feminist lens. Poking fun at the men who have stolen the limelight for far too many years\, Marie-Angelique\, Cecilia\, and Eugenia track the progress of-and interact with-Louis Riel and Thomas Scott. -Michael Shamata and Nigel Shawn Williams \nThis production of Women of the Fur Trade is supported in part by a generous gift from Diane Scott. \nURLs:\nTickets: https://go.evvnt.com/3784665-0?pid=10320\nFacebook: https://go.evvnt.com/3784665-2?pid=10320\nInstagram: https://go.evvnt.com/3784665-3?pid=10320\nYouTube: https://go.evvnt.com/3784665-4?pid=10320 \nDate and Time: Tuesday\, 08 September 2026 at 19:30 – Sunday\, 04 October 2026 at 21:30 \nVenue details: Belfry Theatre\, 1291 Gladstone Avenue\, Victoria\, British Columbia\, V8T 2Y5\, Canada \nCategory: Arts | Performing Arts | Theatre \nPrice:\nPWYC-Recommended $20 to $60: CAD 50.00 \nArtists: Frances Koncan\, Danica Charlie\, Amanda Lisman\, Jonathan Mason\, Aren Okemaysim\, Kelsey Kanatan Wavey\, Frances Koncan\, Kathleen MacLean\, Denyse Karn\, Jeff Chief\, Leigh Ann Vardy\, Wayne Kelso\, Katerina Sokyrko\, Kelsey Cain

SUMMARY:Voices of Earth\, Animism Literacy with Janet Marley
DESCRIPTION:In this course we will engage with our birthright to communicate with the Voices of Earth. Our human nervous systems developed in a context of deep sensory communication with our more-than-human kin\, in coherence and embeddedness with the wild natural world we were part of. \nAlthough as modern humans we now have many barriers separating us from this connected context\, we all have the capacity to develop attunement to the language of Gaia through our 5 senses as well as our felt senses and our innate capacities for extended cognition through interpersonal neurobiology\, interspecies neurobiology\, and morphic field consciousness. \nIn these four sessions\, we will embark on a step-by-step journey of sensing and sense-making in order to …\nCLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE \n

SUMMARY:Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:As the environmental crisis accelerates\, artists around the world are responding with urgency\, insight and vision. Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change is the first major exhibition in Canada to examine the intersection of the climate crisis and contemporary art on a global scale. \nFeaturing works from the past 25 years\, this exhibition underscores the urgency and relevance of sustainability and the environment as defining issues of our time. More than 35 works across a range of media—from large-scale video installations to living sculptures—invite viewers to confront pressing questions about our shared future on this planet. \nPresented across multiple floors\, Future Geographies includes a newly commissioned work by Jeffrey Gibson and marks the first time several artists are exhibiting in Vancouver\, including Teresita Fernández\, Josh Kline\, Cannupa Hanska Luger\, Jean Shin and Clarissa Tossin. The exhibition also features major works by BC–based artists such as Brian Jungen\, Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill and Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun\, connecting global issues with local specificity. Together\, the works in this exhibition invite dialogue and create space for imagining. \nIn conjunction with the exhibition\, the Vancouver Art Gallery is partnering with the University of British Columbia Climate Action Lab to create unique platforms for cross disciplinary dialogue. After its presentation at the Vancouver Art Gallery\, Future Geographies will travel to the Art Gallery of Ontario. \nFuture Geographies will continue on the Gallery’s 4th Floor with the immersive installation SANCTUARY: The Ancient Forest Experience\, by Dr. T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss\, Damien Gillis and Olivier Leroux\, and a presentation of cedar works by local artists\, curated by Dr. Wyss. Find out more » \nA public artwork by Cannupa Hanska Luger will be featured on a billboard on 1611 E Hastings Street (near Commercial Drive) and is a collaboration with Capture Photography Festival. Find out more » \nThe Gallery has partnered with Canada’s National Observer to present Future Geographies online\, extending the exhibition to audiences worldwide.

SUMMARY:Concerto di Margherita Il Gioco della cieca (Blind Man’s Bluff) (ITALY)
DESCRIPTION:Taking as an inspiration the vocal and instrumental works of late 16th and early 17th century Italian composers such as deWert\, Caccini\, Kapsberger and d’India\, the ensemble Concerto di Margherita presents a fable of an archetypal Lover\, caught\, like Amaryllis in Guarini’s play\, in a cruel game of Blind Man’s Bluff. Playing with sight and visibility throughout the concert\, the musicians\, who all sing and accompany themselves on their instrument\, take the audience with them on the Lover’s path: born in Arcadian innocence\, blinded and deluded by love\, lost and disoriented in darkness and finding solace in obscurity.

SUMMARY:Hands Off Old Growth! - Rally Oct. 4th
DESCRIPTION:Old growth forests continue to be logged at a breathtaking rate. Our group\, Elders for Ancient Trees\, and the other environmental organizations involved in the United We Stand movement\, have continued to keep up the pressure on government. We have rallied\, visited MLA offices\, written letters\, sung carols (with forest-related lyrics) outside Ravi Parmar’s office. Last November\, we helped to organize the Broken Promises rally\, which highlighted the many promises made by the NDP government concerning old growth protection\, none of which have been kept. Thirteen communities\, right across BC\, participated\, supported by shared materials to help them organize successful events. \nNow it’s time for renewed pressure on the government. Currently\, old growth forests are more under threat than ever. Every day\, roughly 100 soccer fields of old growth are logged\, including areas identified for deferral. That’s over 25\,000 hectares per year\, more than twice the size of Vancouver! As we all know\, once these ancient forest ecosystems are gone\, they’re gone forever. \nThis is why we’re now planning a rally at the BC legislature on October 4\, the day before parliament opens. This rally will be echoed in communities across BC\, from Vancouver Island to Nelson. Each community can decide on their own formats\, but they will be supported by materials developed in Victoria that they can adapt for their own use. \nBC Legislature lawn\, Victoria \nOctober 4\, 1:00–3:00 PM \nSpeakers\, live music\, and a giant “Hands Off” canvas where you can trace your hand

SUMMARY:Hands Off Old Growth Rally
DESCRIPTION:Old growth and primary forests are non-renewable: once they’re logged\, they’re gone forever. Yet B.C. continues to clearcut roughly 100 soccer fields of old growth every single day\, five years after promising a paradigm shift in forest management. Forestry workers are losing more jobs each month.  In response\, communities across BC are organizing on October 4\, the day before the BC legislature opens\, to push for the protection of old growth forests. \nIn Victoria\, join us and trace your hand on our giant “Hands Off” canvas\, raise your voice in unity\, hear from key speakers\, and enjoy live music. Other communities currently planning events are Nelson\, Comox Valley\, and possibly others.

SUMMARY:Gold Rush Women
DESCRIPTION:Beginning with the Fraser River in 1858\, gold rushes shaped BC economically\, socially and physically. While most gold-rush prospectors\, miners and business people were men\, many women were also drawn to BC during these lively times—and not just in ways you might think. This year\, Yvonne Van Ruskenveld and others will focus her annual women’s history tour on women in gold rush BC.
