DESCRIPTION:Initially not much more than a good natured musical one-off between friends\, the West Coast quartet In Spite of Ourselves has evolved into a highly entertaining act with a mission- to keep alive the deep and timeless catalogue of songwriter John Prine. \nAn unspoken understanding of this mission is the belief that there are only two kinds of people in the musical world: those whose lives have been profoundly changed by Prine\, and those who haven’t heard him yet. \nn Spite of Ourselves: A Celebration of the Music of John Prine brings together the interpretive talents of multi-instrumentalist/producer Doug Cox\, Juno Award-winning Tom and Kalissa Landa from the Paperboys\, and Nashville/Vancouver Island songwriter/artist Steve Mitchell. \nAll lifelong Prine devotees\, the members of In Spite of Ourselves take turns diving deep into the Prine songbook. With a twinkle in his eye\, Doug Cox leads the band through a joyously loose reading of Prine’s “You Got Gold” featuring a drunken-sounding orchestra of fiddle\, harmonica\, and melodica. The new settings made for new strategies\, including strategies for non-violent direct action – pipeline politics is just one example. Now that both neoliberalism and liberal democracy are in trouble\, the necessary strategic thinking must shift again\, for the space-time settings for politics are changing as well. \n**Bio: James (or Jamie) Lawson is Associate Professor in Canadian Politics at the Department of Political Science at the University of Victoria. His specialization is in the political economy of land and resources\, with a special interest in the role of non-violent direct action in forest and petroleum politics. He has taught courses and written on climate politics\, including the oil policies of populism in Alberta. He also teaches regularly in the institutions of government\, and did his master’s degree on federalism.

The evening will start with a short concert featuring Q Brooke Bachand who will be presenting repertoire from their upcoming album “Seeds of Discontent”. Non-binary west-coast artist ‘Q’ \, has been celebrated in the Canadian and International Celtic music scene as one half of the award-winning powerhouse duo Qristina and Quinn Bachand. Recognized for their powerful fiddle\, captivating vocals and infectious energy\, their love of Folk and Celtic music has always been at the forefront as they captivate audiences with spirited performances that showcase their fiddle and vocal talents\, along with their passion for folk songs and storytelling. \nFor over 20 years Q has graced stages across Canada\, the United States and Europe\, earning numerous nominations and winning multiple awards including two Irish Music Awards (Top Duo and Top Traditional Group). More recently Q has grown into their (non-binary) gender identity and life’s purpose and are singing rebel ballads and folk songs (acapella and self-accompanied)\, interspersed with rip-roaring fiddle tunes to help heal the soul. Their music will inspire as they will bring you to tears or have you clapping along and stomping your feet! \nThere will be a short intermission between the concert and dance\, the concession (sweets and non-alcoholic beverages) will be open for the rest of the night. All proceeds from concession sales will be going towards SNWWOC (Support Network for Indigenous Women and Women of Colour) as well as to the Victoria Native Friendship Centre. \nAfter the intermission\, we will enjoy a fun all-ages barn dance with “caller” Cohan Lyne teaching and calling the dances! Tea Creek works to rediscover and reveal the Indigenous expertise that historically outperformed colonial agriculture practices… until that knowledge was erased by colonial systems and residential schools. Now\, we follow Tea Creek as they reintegrate traditional agricultural knowledge through the growing season\, and resist the ongoing impacts of colonization\, led by a passionate leader with a vision for change\, healing and abundance.
