SUMMARY:Builders of the Dunsmuir Legacy
DESCRIPTION:On September 30\, 1890\, the Vancouver World reported that Joan Dunsmuir had moved into her new $500\,000 residence. Craigdarroch Castle’s scale and grandeur were unprecedented in Victoria\, inspiring admiration for its craftsmanship while drawing attention to the wealth and power it so boldly displayed. Although scores of city dwellers worked on the construction project\, many key tradesmen came from elsewhere. Several remained in Victoria\, building their reputations on the skills showcased at Craigdarroch. Drawing on research from the book\, Craigdarroch Reconstructed\, castle curator Jenny Seeman will introduce us to some of the architects\, contractors\, and craftsmen behind the iconic Dunsmuir homes that still shape Victoria’s skyline.

SUMMARY:Remembering the 2021 Heat Dome
DESCRIPTION:Please join UBC researchers and Society Promoting Environmental Conservation\, United Way BC Healthy Aging\, Climate Disaster Project\, and Seniors for Climate for an event on Sunday August 16th to remember the 2021 heat dome. The heat dome was responsible for 619 deaths across BC. The community partners and UBC researchers are building a “living memorial” project to the 2021 heat dome and the impacts of extreme heat. This project remembers those who we lost and works to bring continued awareness to the lived experience of extreme heat. \nThe event will include: a premiere of video testimonies from the Climate Disaster Project; a community art project to decorate fabric squares in memory of the heat dome; an opportunity for community members to share their heat experiences in a community roundtable; and storytelling from Kung Jaadee\, an Indigenous (Haida\, Musqueam\, Squamish) storyteller\, educator and published author. Young Recital Hall with three nights of exceptional jazz\, presented by the UJAM Summer Jazz Workshop\, a five day intensive led by some of the finest jazz educators in Victoria. Each night offers a double bill drawn from the workshop faculty and friends\, an intimate window into the artistry behind the teaching. \nTuesday opens the series with a rising talent: Stella White\, an 18-year-old DownBeat Award-winning vocalist studying jazz performance at McGill under Camille Thurman\, brings a soulful sensibility shaped by Sarah Vaughan\, Carmen McRae\, and Jazzmeia Horn. She’s followed by Juno-nominated saxophonist Ryan Oliver\, a Western Canadian Music Awards “Jazz Musician of the Year” nominee who has toured the globe with The Shuffle Demons and co-leads The Cookers Quintet. \nWednesday brings a Core Faculty Showcase\, gathering the workshop’s instrumentalists for a freewheeling collaborative set\, followed by celebrated singer-composer Brian Tate. DESCRIPTION:Creative Cottage Camp\n\nIf your kids enjoy visiting the Sooke Region Museum for school tours\, they’ll LOVE our summer camp! \nFor 2 weeks\, kids will participate in skill-building workshops in the mornings with theatrical and musical activities in the afternoons. Outdoor time and games included – all on the grounds and in the historic buildings of the Sooke Region Museum. \nMornings will be filled with skill-building activities\, while the afternoons will focus on music and theatre.\nSkill building will focus on homesteading – like the people who lived in Moss Cottage – making butter\, bread\, jam\, sewing. These are life skills just as important today as they were in 1902! Learning to source materials locally\, we will practice reducing waste and experience how historical skills are relevant to modern-day life. \nPerformance exercises and activities will be led by Katrina Kadoski in the afternoons. With her extensive acting and music experience\, Katrina will show participants how to embody their characters informed by the morning’s historical skill building activities. Have you ever used a washboard as a musical instrument? \nOn the last day of the two-week camp the children will perform a bit of what they’ve learned and created. \nFor the best experience\, camp will be limited to maximum 10 children. DESCRIPTION:Mike Abe will start the program with a tour about the history of Japanese Victoria. Meet inside the main gate of the cemetery on Fairfield Road. This will be followed by the Obon ceremony at 3 PM. Obon is a festival for the Japanese Buddhist Day of the Dead when graves are cleaned\, incense is lit and prayers are said. The Obon ceremony will begin at 3 pm at the Kakehashi Monument in the southwest corner of RBC\, near the corner of Memorial Crescent and Dallas Road. The public are invited to the tour and ceremony.

SUMMARY:Norman Morison: Victoria’s Mayflower — Part II
DESCRIPTION:The Hudson Bay Company-owned ship Norman Morison made three voyages (1850\, 1851\, 1853) from Great Britain to Victoria. The third voyage was the HBC’s first attempt to introduce settlers. It included many families who entered five-year indentured commitments to the HBC in return for their own land. As these settlers became the early core of the Capital Region\, the Norman Morison can be considered our Mayflower. Mike Woodcock will build on last year’s tour by taking us to the graves and highlighting the stories of more of these early passengers. The tour will finish at the grave site of a notable Norman Morison passenger where a new grave marker has been installed.

DESCRIPTION:The Unist’ot’en clan continue to fight against industrial development on their sovereign Yintah. \nInstead of two work parties\, they are doing one extra long one\, August 1st until September 7th\, and can use help. \nAll skills are welcome but especially: skilled tradespeople (plumbing\, electrical\, carpenters\, etc)\, dishwashers\, mechanics\, herbalists\, cooks\, chainsaw operators\, and people familiar with off-grid systems. If you aren’t sure if you are ready for a trip like this\, we encourage you to fill out the registration form and have a chat with our volunteers. DESCRIPTION:The Fifty Fifty Arts Collective presents Mending Gently\, a solo art exhibition by Jenna Short. Jenna is a Dakelh artist from the Saik’uz First Nation. She has always felt connected to forests\, oceans\, and the land\, which became grounding spaces in her life and provided a safe blanket and place to breathe during times of uncertainty. \nThis connection later influenced Jenna’s art practice. She often works with figurative and landscape subjects through oil painting\, watercolour\, and wood carvings. Her art practice heavily includes plywood\, with the material acting as colonized and commercialized pieces of land that are being returned to the body.
