SUMMARY:Invasive Species and Novel Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Course description\nInvasive species are highly successful species often dispersed by people\, frequently transported by commercial or recreational activities. In this course we’ll examine the biology of invasive species\, focusing on the life-history adaptations and dispersal strategies that contribute to their success at both the individual and population levels. \nUpon completing the course\, you’ll be able to: \n\nidentify common invasive species\ndescribe their distributions\, life cycles\, growth habits\, reproductive characteristics and adaptation\n\nYou’ll also learn about control options including preventative\, cultural\, biological and chemical control methods. \nFinally\, you’ll explore novel ecosystems that are created when invasive species insert themselves into the fabric of natural ecosystems\, and the problems they pose to traditional approaches to ecosystem management such as when an endangered species becomes dependent on an invasive species for its survival. \nFormat\nOnline format over a 14-week period\, requiring approximately 10 hours of coursework per week.

SUMMARY:Let’s Talk Heat - A Dialogue to Help Launch a BC Heat Collaborative
DESCRIPTION:Extreme heat is an increasing danger for residents of B.C. and much needs to be done. Several heat-focused groups in BC are taking steps to initiate a Heat Collaborative. This initiative seeks to take a cross-sectional approach in advocating for livable temperatures for all. We are bringing together a diverse cross-section of individuals and groups engaging or concerned with heat in some aspect of their interest\, work or membership. \nPlease register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/E0qkViDfT8CB-nCeVyZ1cA. \nTo help launch the Heat Collaborative – we want to hear your heat stories.\nOn May 6\, 2026\, we will be having small group discussions about how you have experienced heat issues in your community and place of work and what solutions we all need to achieve safer communities. We will then hear about some of the work currently being done to address the issues and what gaps remain.\nTo close\, we will ask participants to respond to a short questionnaire about their interests and messages for the Heat Collaborative to be an effective vehicle for livable temperatures for all. \nFacebook event page to share: https://www.facebook.com/share/1BEHE9ewpr/

SUMMARY:The Gondoliers
DESCRIPTION:The Gondoliers\, or The King of Barataria\, is a Savoy Opera\, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It premiered at the Savoy Theatre in London on 7 December 1889 and ran for a very successful 554 performances (at that time the fifth longest-running piece of musical theatre in history)\, closing on 30 June 1891. This was the twelfth comic opera collaboration of fourteen between Gilbert and Sullivan. \nThe story of the opera concerns brothers Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri\, a pair of Venetian gondoliers who are told that one of them is heir to the throne of the fictional kingdom of Barataria; until it can be discovered by the Grand Inquisitor which of them is the heir\, they must rule jointly. Unbeknownst to the brothers\, who have just married Venetian girls\, the heir was wed in infancy to the daughter of the Spanish Duke of Plaza-Toro\, who is herself in love with her father’s servant. A subplot concerns the impoverished Duke attempting to improve his finances by turning himself into a limited liability company. \nJoin us for an evening of song\, dance and humour such that only the operas of Gilbert and Sullivan can provide. \nMusical direction by Peter Butterfield and stage direction by Rachel Moss. \nThere are two shows at Dave Dunnet Theatre: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/the-gondoliers-presented-by-the-victoria-gilbert-sullivan-society-tickets-1840610969959 \nThere are also two shows at the Charlie White Theatre\, Mary Winspear Centre: https://marywinspear.ca/events-and-programs/the-gondaliers/?srsltid=AfmBOoo-nHe8Su7T8ajd73LtNpQ8TSWaxpG19lH-q_yZcZKPVcWp5Q-W \nPhone: 250-656-0275. SUMMARY:Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:As the environmental crisis accelerates\, artists around the world are responding with urgency\, insight and vision. Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change is the first major exhibition in Canada to examine the intersection of the climate crisis and contemporary art on a global scale. \nFeaturing works from the past 25 years\, this exhibition underscores the urgency and relevance of sustainability and the environment as defining issues of our time. More than 35 works across a range of media—from large-scale video installations to living sculptures—invite viewers to confront pressing questions about our shared future on this planet. \nPresented across multiple floors\, Future Geographies includes a newly commissioned work by Jeffrey Gibson and marks the first time several artists are exhibiting in Vancouver\, including Teresita Fernández\, Josh Kline\, Cannupa Hanska Luger\, Jean Shin and Clarissa Tossin. The exhibition also features major works by BC–based artists such as Brian Jungen\, Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill and Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun\, connecting global issues with local specificity. Together\, the works in this exhibition invite dialogue and create space for imagining. \nIn conjunction with the exhibition\, the Vancouver Art Gallery is partnering with the University of British Columbia Climate Action Lab to create unique platforms for cross disciplinary dialogue. After its presentation at the Vancouver Art Gallery\, Future Geographies will travel to the Art Gallery of Ontario. \nFuture Geographies will continue on the Gallery’s 4th Floor with the immersive installation SANCTUARY: The Ancient Forest Experience\, by Dr. T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss\, Damien Gillis and Olivier Leroux\, and a presentation of cedar works by local artists\, curated by Dr. Wyss.
