SUMMARY:Love to Sing!!!!!! The Victoria Arion Male Choir Invitation to January 2026 Open Houses
DESCRIPTION:The Victoria Arion Male Choir: Tradition and Community \nAbout the Choir\nThe Victoria Arion Male Choir represents one of the newest additions to the vibrant choral scene in Victoria\, BC. Formed in the summer of 2018\, the choir is the result of the union between two long-standing ensembles: the Arion Male Voice Choir\, established in 1892\, and the Victoria Male Voice Choir\, founded in 1907. Both groups recognized the opportunity to better pursue their vision of creating “a community of men singing for health and joy” by coming together as one. This merger has proven to be a dynamic and successful venture\, yielding positive results both musically and organizationally. \nOur Mission\nThe choir is dedicated to sustaining the rich tradition of male-voice choral music. Each year\, members share their passion for music through a minimum of two public concerts\, as well as performances at seniors’ residences\, the Victoria Remembrance Day ceremony\, and other community events. In support of music education\, the Victoria Arion Male Choir offers a choral scholarship program\, inviting up to four student musicians annually to join and perform with the group. New members are always welcome to experience the camaraderie and joy of choral singing. \nLeadership\nUnder the direction of Musical Director Sean Lampard-Quicke\, who joined the choir in 2020\, and the accompaniment of collaborative pianist Jennifer Mitchell\, a member since 2019\, the choir continues to thrive and evolve. \nMembership and Rehearsals\nThe Victoria Arion Male Choir is actively seeking new singers for its non-audition choir\, beginning in January 2026. Open houses will be held on Mondays\, January 5th\, 12th\, and 19th; rehearsals start at 7:00 p.m. each Monday.  at Cordova Bay United Church\, located at 813 Claremont Ave. The choir performs four-part harmony\, with a diverse repertoire that includes classical\, spiritual\, folk\, and contemporary selections. Additionally\, the choir welcomes applications for its choral scholar program. \nFor those interested in joining as a new member or learning more about the choral scholar program\, please contact Jim Johnson at jimmysj@shaw.ca or visit the choir’s website at www.vamc.ca. \n

SUMMARY:From Concern to Action: Introducing the PREPARE Framework
DESCRIPTION:Preparing for climate change starts with people. \nRe.Climate’s PREPARE Framework shows communicators how to build agency\, care and trust with their audiences the three conditions that turn climate concern into community action. \nCanada’s Changing Climate 2026 report outlines what is coming: more warming and worse fires\, heat events\, floods and droughts. People are already living with these impacts and want to know what can be done. \nOver the last two years\, Re.Climate has worked with ClimateWest\, the regional hub for climate services in the Prairies\, and SevGen Consulting Inc.\, an Indigenous-owned consulting firm\, on the Climate Ready Prairies project\, developing training and guidance on communicating and engaging with communities in Alberta\, Saskatchewan and Manitoba on climate adaptation and preparedness. Now we are excited to share how this work and insights from the region can be useful to anyone across Canada. \nThe PREPARE Framework distills that work from the Climate Ready Prairies project into a clear set of practices It was developed with and for Prairie communities but offers an approach that communicators in the other parts of the country can use and adapt. \nThe PREPARE Framework is a valuable tool for anyone helping their community to get ready for climate impacts. \nThe webinar will touch on how communicating about adaptation differs from mitigation\, how Indigenous and regional knowledge and expertise shaped the framework\, and the latest on framing and language that can build understanding of climate preparedness. SUMMARY:Avery Raquel ~ 2026 Slow Motion Tour
DESCRIPTION:Witness the evolution of one of Canada’s most formidable young musical forces. At just 24 years old\, Billboard-charting recording artist and multi-instrumentalist Avery Raquel takes the stage for a mesmerizing live experience that redefines the boundaries of modern soul. \nThe Slow Motion Tour is a brilliant collision of musical eras. Backed by an elite and accomplished band\, Avery seamlessly weaves her deep roots in classic jazz with the sultry\, atmospheric textures of contemporary R&B and alternative soul. Having recently returned from Europe after earning her master’s degree from Berklee College of Music\, Avery brings a fierce\, refined musicianship to the stage. Her multi-octave range—praised as “lustrous\, precise\, and luminously powerful”—commands the room from the very first note\, effortlessly shifting from a whisper to a soaring\, emotive roar. \nThis is a night of honest\, vulnerable storytelling packaged in infectious hooks\, lush live arrangements\, and undeniable Canadian talent. The performance is meticulously paced to highlight Avery’s journey from jazz prodigy to contemporary R&B innovator. \nWith an intimate\, late-night jazz club energy feel\, Avery demonstrates her multi-instrumental prowess\, trading off between the piano and guitar. This show features jazz-tinged\, stripped-back arrangements of her earlier discography\, alongside smoky\, neo-soul-inspired new material.   \nThroughout the entire concert the energy builds as her full band takes over\, diving into the heart of her celebrated self-titled album. Audiences will experience live\, driving renditions of fan favorites like “Helpless”\, “Please\,” “You”\, and ‘Nothing More”\, alongside the critically acclaimed tracks that swept the John Lennon Songwriting Competition. \nThe show culminates in a wave of lush\, modern\, ambient grooves. Showcasing her newest material—including “Hard To Stay”\, “The Letter”\, and tracks from her Slow Motion EP—Avery leans into atmospheric 80s\, rich vocal harmonies\, and irresistible\, deep R&B pockets that keep the crowd moving. \nAvery Raquel has been captivating audiences professionally for over a decade\, but this tour marks a profound “rebirth” of her artistry. She possesses a rare\, magnetic ability to make a large performing arts center feel like a tight-knit\, emotional sanctuary. For anyone who loves the timeless depth of Amy Winehouse\, the vocal precision of jazz greats\, and the fresh\, current edge of modern R&B\, this concert is a masterclass in what the future of soul music sounds like. \nJoin us for two exclusive ‘limited engagement’ concerts this October. \nVictoria – The Coda (751 View Street) – October 14\, 2026: Show 1: 6:30 pm | Show 2: 9:30 pm

SUMMARY:Help Advance the New Forest Act - A Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Houghton\, Campaign Director\, of The New Forest Act Project will host a free online training workshop for people who want to help advance the New Forest Act at 6 pm (PST)\, Tuesday\, October 13th. \nGovernment knows about the New Forest Act. Now we need more people helping to advance it. \nThe NFA is not asking government for another program\, planning process\, or new terminology for the existing forestry system. It calls for replacement of BC’s existing forestry laws with a new legal framework that puts ecological functioning\, community decision-making\, and stable local economies into law. \nThat difference is important now that the province is promoting its Working Forest Landscape Model and three-zone approach. It may sound similar to the NFA’s Protect–Restore–Harvest framework\, but the underlying systems are very different. \nThis workshop will cover: \n\nwhat the New Forest Act proposes and why the changes need to be in law;\nhow Protect–Restore–Harvest differs from the government’s three-zone approach;\nkey questions government has asked about the proposal;\nhow to explain the NFA clearly without having to become a forestry expert;\nhow to take the proposal to MLAs\, local governments\, organizations\, and other decision-makers; and\npractical resources people can use to help build support.\n\nRetired forester and NFA co-author Dave Weaver will talk about what Protect–Restore–Harvest means on the ground and will be available to answer technical questions. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Commie Bop Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\n\n\nA Commie Bop is an expression of freedom\, verve\, and solidarity. Share yours with us and let’s bask in the liberating imagination of our city! \n\n\nSign Up Opens at 6:30 before the event . No advanced online sign up for July 2026 event. \nDoors: 6pm\, Event: 7pm – 10pm\nCo hosts: TBA and Wes Carroll \nAll proceeds go to Common Horizon\, Victoria chapter\, * who are building a mass movement of everyday people. They aim to take power away from the billionaire class and win solutions to the climate crisis that secure good jobs and address affordability. This summer they are pushing for an excess profits tax on oil and gas companies. \nCommie Bop is now offered through South Island Worker’s Cultural Education League! Check out our Choir\, Outdoor Club\, Worker’s Cafe\, Book Club\, and Soccer Team. \nAbout Commie Bop: A Commie Bop is freedom in motion: a song\, a poem\, a spell\, a skit\, a dance against the grind of colonial capitalism. It’s where creativity smashes exploitation\, where solidarity squeezes alienation\, and where we (yes\, we\, the ridiculous and unruly) celebrate our collective fire. This is a space to howl anti-capitalist anthems\, share art that bites back\, and honour past and future generations. Leftist debates? Vital. But tonight we revel in the kaleidoscope of our movement\, checking our purity test kits at the door with our hearts open to each other’s stories. We have license to be silly little peasants! Think Carnival\, mocking lords and kings… \nOpen Mic Sets: Your offering does NOT need to involve a complex analysis – our day-to-day experiences put us into the crosshairs of capitalism’s contradictions. Sets should be 10 minutes or less. Please explain why you chose or wrote what you’re sharing. Performers are encouraged to make space for audience participation – teach us your chorus\, wrangle us into your skit\, add call and response\, or bring up Alice to play the tambourine or the triangle. \nAll acts should\, in their own unique way\, call for an end to exploitation and discrimination. This space celebrates dignity. Check lyrics for oppressive and triggering language (racist\, sexist\, ableist\, SWERFS\, TERFS\, etc.). We fight systems\, not each other. Please respect the venue. \n*Every month a different not-for-profit co-hosts and benefits from funds raised. Follow us on Instagram for monthly update.

SUMMARY:Climate Looming
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join Atelier Aloera\, Seniors for Climate\, and Suzuki Elders in this intergenerational paper quilt-weaving workshop (weaving\, hence looming…) where our climate perspectives are joined together in unified hope. \nHosted by Wild Bird Trust BC\, we will start with science-based communication about protection and restoration initiatives our team is working on\, then open up the floor to imagining futures that could come from collective efforts through scrapbooking. The final product will be a co-created “quillt”\, a piece of artwork with embedded climate intentions and curiosities. \nBe part of this meaningful intergenerational dialogue! Admission is free and we encourage you to bring friends from all walks of life! Coffee\, tea\, hot water\, and some light snacks and fruit will be provided.

SUMMARY:Biodiversity Walk at Roberts Bank
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 18th\, 2026 at 9:30am (Pacific Time) in Delta for a biodiversity walk to learn about the wildlife near Roberts Bank. \nIt’s been an exhausting few months between pipeline announcements and environmental protection rollbacks. We want to offer this land-based learning experience to reconnect with nature and community\, and help ground people in the real places we’re trying to protect. Making new connections with your community members is fun\, too! \nThis biodiversity walk will be near the likely future site of Roberts Bank Terminal 2 and the new West Coast Pipeline\, two projects that GSA is actively fighting against to protect the Salish Sea. \nWe’ll be there to talk about these projects\, while an experienced birder from Delta Naturalists Society will lead the walk\, so bring your binoculars\, cameras\, and bird-ID books! \nIf you want to reconnect with nature\, find fresh motivation and inspiration during these troubling times\, and learn how to protect the Salish Sea from marine mammal and bird advocates\, we can’t wait to see you there! \nEvent Details: \nWe will meet in Delta at 9:30 am at 3306 Tsawwassen Drive North. The biodiversity walk is expected to last 2 – 3 hours\, depending on weather conditions and tides. Afterwards\, there is an open invitation for everyone to meet at the Douglas J. Husband Discovery Centre in Ladner for the “Welcoming Back the Birds” event held by the City of Delta\, where Delta Naturalists Society has a display table. This will be a chance to celebrate the birds returning to Delta with themed activities for all the family\, bird films\, and nature booths from 1:30pm – 4pm.
