SUMMARY:The Gondoliers
DESCRIPTION:The Gondoliers\, or The King of Barataria\, is a Savoy Opera\, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It premiered at the Savoy Theatre in London on 7 December 1889 and ran for a very successful 554 performances (at that time the fifth longest-running piece of musical theatre in history)\, closing on 30 June 1891. This was the twelfth comic opera collaboration of fourteen between Gilbert and Sullivan. \nThe story of the opera concerns brothers Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri\, a pair of Venetian gondoliers who are told that one of them is heir to the throne of the fictional kingdom of Barataria; until it can be discovered by the Grand Inquisitor which of them is the heir\, they must rule jointly. Unbeknownst to the brothers\, who have just married Venetian girls\, the heir was wed in infancy to the daughter of the Spanish Duke of Plaza-Toro\, who is herself in love with her father’s servant. A subplot concerns the impoverished Duke attempting to improve his finances by turning himself into a limited liability company. \nJoin us for an evening of song\, dance and humour such that only the operas of Gilbert and Sullivan can provide. \nMusical direction by Peter Butterfield and stage direction by Rachel Moss. \nThere are two shows at Dave Dunnet Theatre: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/the-gondoliers-presented-by-the-victoria-gilbert-sullivan-society-tickets-1840610969959 \nThere are also two shows at the Charlie White Theatre\, Mary Winspear Centre: https://marywinspear.ca/events-and-programs/the-gondaliers/?srsltid=AfmBOoo-nHe8Su7T8ajd73LtNpQ8TSWaxpG19lH-q_yZcZKPVcWp5Q-W \nPhone: 250-656-0275. Email: info@marywinspear.ca. \nBox Office. Mon – Fri 9:30am – 5:00pm. \nGreat gifts for those G&S fans you love!

SUMMARY:Listening for What Wants to Emerge: A Conversation with Otto Scharmer
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a Resilience and Possibility in These Times conversation with Otto Scharmer on Wednesday\, May 13th. \nIf you’re searching for an effective response to what you see and feel happening in the world today\, you are not alone. Many are feeling the weight of this moment\, while also sensing something new is trying to emerge. This gathering offers a space to listen more deeply for what is y(ours) to do. \nOtto is one of the leading voices in transformational education and leadership in our time\, and a teacher whose work has deeply influenced the Pachamama Alliance. As the creator of Theory U and founder of the Presencing Institute\, he has supported leaders and communities around the world to sense beneath the noise and fragmentation of this time and reconnect with the deeper field of awareness and relationship from which a regenerative future can emerge. \nIn this conversation\, we will explore what it means to shift from ego-system to eco-system awareness and why regenerative transformation begins in the “social soil\,” the quality of awareness and relationship beneath the systems we are trying to change. \nThis initial encounter between Pachanama Alliance and Otto Scharmer\, just could be one of those conversations that “changes everything.” Come and see! \nRegister here: https://landing.pachamama.org/otto-scharmer-2026 \n

SUMMARY:Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:As the environmental crisis accelerates\, artists around the world are responding with urgency\, insight and vision. Future Geographies: Art in the Century of Climate Change is the first major exhibition in Canada to examine the intersection of the climate crisis and contemporary art on a global scale. \nFeaturing works from the past 25 years\, this exhibition underscores the urgency and relevance of sustainability and the environment as defining issues of our time. More than 35 works across a range of media—from large-scale video installations to living sculptures—invite viewers to confront pressing questions about our shared future on this planet. \nPresented across multiple floors\, Future Geographies includes a newly commissioned work by Jeffrey Gibson and marks the first time several artists are exhibiting in Vancouver\, including Teresita Fernández\, Josh Kline\, Cannupa Hanska Luger\, Jean Shin and Clarissa Tossin. The exhibition also features major works by BC–based artists such as Brian Jungen\, Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill and Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun\, connecting global issues with local specificity. Together\, the works in this exhibition invite dialogue and create space for imagining. \nIn conjunction with the exhibition\, the Vancouver Art Gallery is partnering with the University of British Columbia Climate Action Lab to create unique platforms for cross disciplinary dialogue. After its presentation at the Vancouver Art Gallery\, Future Geographies will travel to the Art Gallery of Ontario. \nFuture Geographies will continue on the Gallery’s 4th Floor with the immersive installation SANCTUARY: The Ancient Forest Experience\, by Dr. T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss\, Damien Gillis and Olivier Leroux\, and a presentation of cedar works by local artists\, curated by Dr. Wyss. Find out more » \nA public artwork by Cannupa Hanska Luger will be featured on a billboard on 1611 E Hastings Street (near Commercial Drive) and is a collaboration with Capture Photography Festival. Find out more » \nThe Gallery has partnered with Canada’s National Observer to present Future Geographies online\, extending the exhibition to audiences worldwide.

SUMMARY:Darn It! Reskilling Workshop with Zero Waste Sooke
DESCRIPTION:Tired of holey socks and sweaters? Looking for an opportunity to increase your skills\, help the planet\, and give new life to your old clothes? \nTextile and clothing waste is a serious and increasing problem. Around the world\, people are buying more\, throwing out more\, and repairing less. Because of this alarming trend\, the amount of clothing waste in landfills continues to rise. \nLuckily\, you can learn how to help out. On 23 May\, the Sooke Region Museum is hosting Darn It!\, a collaboration with Zero Waste Sooke. A team of darning experts\, including Paula Johanson\, Anne Boquist\, Gillian Gravenor\, and Emily Trim\, will teach you how to darn holes in your damaged clothing. No experience is necessary—all you need to bring is the item to be darned\, some yarn that’s compatible with it in width and type\, a darning needle and/or crochet hook\, and a darning mushroom\, darning egg\, incandescent lightbulb\, or small glass jar. (Wooden darning eggs and mushrooms can be purchased for this workshop as an option.) \nThis is the first of two “reskilling” workshops presented by the Sooke Region Museum and Zero Waste Sooke. These workshops aim to teach historically rooted skills and show their continued importance in building an environmentally sustainable present. They fuse the two host organizations’ respective focuses: the Museum is committed to inspiring an appreciation of our past and its relevance to our present and future\, while Zero Waste Sooke is dedicated to a clean(er)\, green(er)\, region that reduces its ecological footprint in common sense and practical ways. \nAt Darn It!\, you’ll learn a fun and useful skill passed down through generations\, all while restoring your garments and keeping them out of the landfill. \nRegistration for each reskilling workshop costs $15 and is limited to 15 people – so register soon to get your spot! If the registration fee is a barrier to you participating in the reskilling workshops\, contact the Museum (250-642-6351 or info@sookeregionmuseum.ca) and we can reduce or waive the fee. If you are able to pay a bit more for registration\, you will have the option at checkout to donate money to these reskilling workshops to remove financial barriers for others.
