SUMMARY:LNG: Not in Our National Interest
DESCRIPTION:“LNG: Not in Our National Interest” is a new national campaign to pressure PM Carney and his key ministers to stop the government from giving billions more of our taxpayer money to dirty energy megaprojects that only benefit foreign billionaires. We want the government to start to fund the clean\, renewable economy instead. \n\n\n\n\n\nHear from movement leaders and experts on why the Ksi Lisims and LNG Canada Phase 2 LNG export projects are not in our national interest. Learn why these foreign-owned\, high-cost projects don’t make economic sense\, will raise energy prices at home\, and harm Indigenous reconciliation. You’ll also learn how much the clean\, renewable economy is better on every measure. \n  \nWe’ll also share details of exciting in-person actions happening across the country for the Week of Action in mid-April. Now is our chance to tell the Carney government that Canadians say NO to more free money for big polluters\, and YES to funding the clean energy economy.  \n  \nSpeakers (and see below):  \n\nChief Na’Moks\, Hereditary Chief of the Wet’suwet’en Nation\nGwii Lok’im Gibuu (Jesse Stoeppler)\, Co-Executive Director of the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition\nDr. Melissa Lem\, Past President\, Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment\nJanelle Lapointe\, Senior Advisor\, David Suzuki Foundation\nAndy Hira\, Clean Energy Research Group\, Simon Fraser University\nKai Nagata\, Energy Campaigner\, Dogwood\nEmiko Newman\, Coordinator\, BC Climate Emergency Campaign\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register for March 31st

SUMMARY:The Feminist Emergency Tour - Analogue Revolution: How Feminist Media Changed the World
DESCRIPTION:Following a successful festival run of her feature documentary film\, Analogue Revolution: How Feminist Media Changed the World\, filmmaker and TMU Professor Emeritus Marusya Bociurkiw will travel to Regina\, Edmonton\, Vancouver\, Victoria\, Nanaimo\, Pender Island and Calgary. \n  \nWhy take to the road? The film is meant to inspire a conversation in which the feminisms of the past -which effectively fought right wing politics in Canada- can inform this current moment. “The Carney government\,” says Bociurkiw\, “has omitted mention of women’s and trans issues in mandate letters\, budgets\, and speeches. Younger women need to know how feminists fought this kind of backlash before.” \n  \nThe tour features screenings\, panel discussions\, and local calls to action directed at local women’s and trans issues. \n  \nAnalogue Revolution is a fast-moving examination of Canadian feminist media  from the late 1960s to the mid-1990s\, when some 900 women’s publications and dozens of festivals and radio shows flourished in Canada -including Herland Feminist Film Festival (Calgary)\, masinahikan iskwêwak (Edmonton/Saskatoon)\, Press Gang Publishers (Vancouver)\, and Studio D at the National Film Board. While confronting censorship\, racism\, and moral panics\, these collectives documented stories that mainstream media ignored. \n  \nFrom the illegal publication of a birth control handbook in Montreal\, to  pro-choice demonstrations from the 1980s\, the film climaxes  with devastating funding cutbacks to women’s and lesbian organizations across Canada following 1989’s École Polytechnique massacre. Through interviews with feminist\, BIPOC\, and trans media activists\, including Sylvia Hamilton\, Bonnie Sherr Klein\, Theo Cuthand\, and others\, and narration by rock icon Carole Pope\, the documentary explores how analogue technologies and collective action expanded what stories activists could tell\, and how they told them. \n  \nAt a moment when gender equity programs\, reproductive healthcare access\, and women’s rights face renewed backlash\, the film shows how feminists fought the right – and won. \n  \nVictoria Tour Date & Contacts: \nMarch 30 – Victoria\, BC\, 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM \n7PM Post screening discussion with Director Marusya Bociurkiw\nCinecenta\, Student Union Bldg\, U Vic\, 3800 Finnerty Road \nContact: cinecentaprogrammer@uvss.ca

SUMMARY:‘Laxwesa Wa – Strength of the River’ Movie Night
DESCRIPTION:Laxwesa Wa – Strength of the River – directed by Barb Cranmer (1995\, 54 min)\, Indigenous filmmaker\nAs distinct fishing societies of great spiritual\, cultural and economic wealth\, Indigenous people have always respected the resources of their rivers and oceans. But within their own lifetime\, they have watched governments “manage” the fishery into a state of crisis. Now it’s time for people to listen to what Indigenous people have to say. Filmmaker Barb Cranmer\, a member of the ’Namgis First Nation\, explores the rich fishing traditions of the Sto:lo\, Heiltsuk and ‘Namgis peoples of Canada’s West Coast in Laxwesa Wa – Strength of the River. With over fifteen years’ experience fishing Johnstone Strait with her father\, Cranmer presents rarely heard stories of traditional fishing practices and documents Indigenous peoples’ efforts to build a sustainable fishery for the future. \nRegister here: https://westcoastclimateaction.ca/register-laxwesa-wa-strength-of-the-river/

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Mahon Hall for a free community screening of TEA CREEK\, a documentary about Indigenous food sovereignty and regenerative agriculture\, presented by the Salt Spring Island Farmland Trust and Story Money Impact. \nIn just three years\, Indigenous activist Jacob Beaton transformed his family farm in Kitwanga\, BC\, into Tea Creek — an award-winning\, Indigenous-led\, culturally safe\, land-based Indigenous food sovereignty and trades training centre dedicated to restoring traditional agricultural knowledge and food systems. \nTea Creek’s mission is to revitalize the culture of economic interdependence and food production that was a central part of life for Indigenous peoples throughout the Americas. \nThe film follows Tea Creek through the growing season and explores the impacts of colonization\, resilience and community-led healing. \nFollowing the film screening\, stay for a panel discussion on regenerative and Indigenous agriculture\, with local and regional voices. Panelists will be announced as they are confirmed. \nSchedule:\n• 1:30 pm: Doors open\n• 2:00 pm: Film Screening\n• 3:15 pm: Panel & Discussion (45 min)\n• 4:00 pm: Reception\n• 4:30 pm: Event Ends \nEveryone is welcome! SUMMARY:Placemaking Café
DESCRIPTION:Are you wondering how you can get more involved in your community or neighbourhood?  This year the Placemaking Network is hoping to give our community members more reasons and opportunities to gather.  We’re thinking about ways we can host and nurture community: a book club\, our LFL festival\, painting a mural together\, workshops and other ideas our Board is dreaming into.  This month we’re hosting our first Placemaking Café of the year.  Our intention is for these to be regular gatherings\, with different topics and themes that encourage us to connect and engage with our neighbourhoods and shared spaces. \nPlease join us for a guided conversation and exploration on the topic of greeting neighbours–even/especially strangers–and cultivating a local culture of doing so. There will be prompts\, some time for collecting your thoughts on your own\, exploring in small groups\, and bringing together the threads across the room. \nWe’ll have some snacks and refreshments available.  This gathering is FREE to attend. \nWhat:       A guided conversation on GREETING NEIGHBOURS\nWhen:      Saturday March 21\, 10-11:30am\nWhere:    NeighbourSpace\, 708 Douglas St\, beside the Victoria Conference Centre \nCome and share your experiences\, hopes\, challenges\, opinions\, expertise\, curiosity… Everyone is welcome\, we’d love to meet you. \nDoors:      9:45am\nStart:        10am (please arrive on time so the conversation can build)\nEnd:          11:30am \nThere is an accessible entrance at street level and one accessible washroom. \nThe Greater Victoria Placemaking Network is a volunteer-run non-profit society whose mission is to inspire people\, neighbourhoods and communities to create vibrant public places that promote health\, happiness and well-being. \nWe are grateful to the City of Victoria for providing the NeighbourSpace for us to gather. \nThe post Placemaking Café appeared first on Greater Victoria Placemaking Network.
