SUMMARY:LNG Not in Our National Interest - Victoria Rally
DESCRIPTION:In a time of global instability and rising energy costs\, Canada faces a critical choice. While communities are calling for affordable\, sustainable solutions\, Prime Minister Mark Carney is pushing to fast-track new fossil fuel megaprojects.\nForeign investors claim liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports are an economic lifeline—but if these projects are so profitable\, why do they rely on billions in public funding?\nJoin local organizations and community members from across Victoria and beyond as we call on Export Development Canada to stop subsidizing costly LNG projects like Ksi Lisims LNG and LNG Canada Phase 2.\nThese foreign-owned megaprojects:\n– Don’t add up economically. – Risk of increasing energy costs at home. – Undermine progress on Indigenous reconciliation.\nTogether\, we’ll stand for a better path—one that prioritizes affordable\, clean\, renewable energy and strong local communities.\n Expect music\, banners\, placards\, and powerful voices.\nBring your friends\, family\, and energy as we rally for a just\, LNG-free future.\nMeet at the EDC Office 1230 Government St\, Victoria.

SUMMARY:Becoming a Good Relative with Hilary Giovale
DESCRIPTION:Join the next Resilience and Possibility in These Times for a conversation with Hilary Giovale\, author of Becoming a Good Relative: Calling White Settlers toward Truth\, Healing\, and Repair. Hilary brings rare clarity and humility to the spiritual and strategic journey of repair and reckoning with the harmful legacies of colonialism. With skill and grace\, she models how we can choose truth-telling over denial\, accountability over paralysis\, and generative grief over shame. \nShe speaks to the grief many feel in the journey to truly understand and heal the legacies and erasures that have shaped us. Facing ancestral history can open pathways toward healing and collective liberation—supporting Indigenous leadership\, repairing harm\, and reclaiming an embodied sense of belonging within one’s own lineage\, without appropriation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n JOIN THE CALL \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt a time when social fractures run deep\, she reminds us that a sustainable\, just\, and thriving future will be created in deep relationship with our own lineages\, with the land\, and with one another. Most importantly\, it will be forged in the responsibility that comes from being alive and awake in these times. \nThis conversation will invite us to examine colonial history with depth\, honesty and equanimity so we can transform these harmful legacies into a sacred responsibility for the flourishing of Life and a future that works for all. \nWe hope you’ll join us for this important and exciting conversation.

SUMMARY:The Climate Politics of Tomorrow: New Settings for Environmental Change-Making
DESCRIPTION:VSHA Speaker Series\nFree* And Open To All! \nWednesday\, April 15\, 2025 – 7:00-8:30 pm\nCook Street Activity Center\n380 Cook St. (Cook St. Village)\, Victoria \n Street Parking \nPlease Enter By The Side Entrance\nCoffee/Tea nearby at The Mocha House – BYO! \nSpeaker:  James Lawson** \nThe last forty years\, often described as “neoliberal”\, re-shaped the political\, social\, and environmental landscape and its rhythms with distinctive infrastructure. The new settings made for new strategies\, including strategies for non-violent direct action – pipeline politics is just one example. Now that both neoliberalism and liberal democracy are in trouble\, the necessary strategic thinking must shift again\, for the space-time settings for politics are changing as well. \n**Bio: James (or Jamie) Lawson is Associate Professor in Canadian Politics at the Department of Political Science at the University of Victoria. His specialization is in the political economy of land and resources\, with a special interest in the role of non-violent direct action in forest and petroleum politics. He has taught courses and written on climate politics\, including the oil policies of populism in Alberta. He also teaches regularly in the institutions of government\, and did his master’s degree on federalism.

SUMMARY:In Spite of Ourselves\, A Celebration of the Music of John Prine\, April 15 at The CODA
DESCRIPTION:Initially not much more than a good natured musical one-off between friends\, the West Coast quartet In Spite of Ourselves has evolved into a highly entertaining act with a mission- to keep alive the deep and timeless catalogue of songwriter John Prine. \nAn unspoken understanding of this mission is the belief that there are only two kinds of people in the musical world: those whose lives have been profoundly changed by Prine\, and those who haven’t heard him yet. \nn Spite of Ourselves: A Celebration of the Music of John Prine brings together the interpretive talents of multi-instrumentalist/producer Doug Cox\, Juno Award-winning Tom and Kalissa Landa from the Paperboys\, and Nashville/Vancouver Island songwriter/artist Steve Mitchell. \nAll lifelong Prine devotees\, the members of In Spite of Ourselves take turns diving deep into the Prine songbook. With a twinkle in his eye\, Doug Cox leads the band through a joyously loose reading of Prine’s “You Got Gold” featuring a drunken-sounding orchestra of fiddle\, harmonica\, and melodica. Tom Landa finds the tender and contemplative heart of “Long Monday\,” and Steve Mitchell goes over to the other side of the tracks on the funky “Mexican Home.” And on \n“Picture Show\,” Kalissa Landa follows up the song’s insanely hooky chorus with a fiddle solo that’s as combustible as an old film projector. \nTragically for all of us\, John Prine left this world at the beginning of the pandemic. But thanks to his songs\, music fans everywhere have a permanent portal into the little universe of his singular mind. \nIn Spite of Ourselves takes you through that door and shows you the house that John Prine built. \nYou’re never going to want to leave. \nURLs:\nTickets: https://go.evvnt.com/3562960-0?pid=10320\nWebsite: https://go.evvnt.com/3562960-2?pid=10320 \nDate and Time: On Wed\, 15 Apr 2026 21:00 – Wed\, 15 Apr 2026 22:30 \nVenue Details: The CODA\, 751 View Street\, Victoria\, British Columbia\, V8W 1J9\, Canada \nCategory: Live Music | Concert \nPrice:\nGeneral Admission: CAD 35.00

SUMMARY:Tales from the Underground with Andy Mackinnon
DESCRIPTION:More species live underground than live aboveground. There’s more life\, and more living\, in the soil\, than there is above it. And everything that happens in our world is dependent on\, and to some extent determined by\, what happens in the subterranean world. Our land use and management have profound\, and mostly unknown\, effects on this underground world. This presentation will dig into west coast soils and see who lives there\, what they’re up to\, and what effect their activities have in our aboveground world. \nPresenter: Forest ecologist Andy MacKinnon (MSc\, DSc) is the co-author of six best-selling guidebooks to BC plants\, and the Royal BC Museum Handbook “Mushrooms of British Columbia”. Through his 30-year career with the BC Forest Service\, Andy was involved in defining and implementing ecosystem-based management in Haida Gwaii and the Great Bear Rainforest. He has co-taught rainforest ecology field courses in Bamfield and Tofino (for UVic) and Haida Gwaii (for UBC). Andy is a retired BC Professional Forester and Professional Biologist\, President of the South Vancouver Island Mycological Society\, and Board Chair for our regional land trust\, Habitat Acquisition Trust. He is an enthusiastic advocate for conservation and responsible resource management.

SUMMARY:Protecting Trees\, Dispelling Myths
DESCRIPTION:While many celebrate a succession of sunny days\, the topic turns serious when fish-bearing streams run dry and forests\, trees and gardens wither under the extremes of drought. \nWater restrictions have limited what farmers and industry formerly took for granted and in many parts of BC the situation has already proven deadly. \nAre we putting too much emphasis on targetting trees as a fire threat while we trustingly leave our highly flammable\, plastic-laden vehicles parked in or next to our residences? \nIn celebration of Earth Week and in honour of our urban and established forests\, Creatively United presents a free webinar/conversation and Q&A with some of BC’s leading experts on tree preservation in light of a changing climate and the threat of fire. \nLearn how to discern truth from half-truth (or fiction)\, protect and preserve trees\, your community\, home and loved ones from the growing threat of fire in an era of climate uncertainty. \nHerb Hammond\, forest ecologist\, professional forester\, author; Rachel Holt\, independant ecologist\, professional biologist; and Dave Daust\, forester\, landscape analyst will dispel some of the myths perpetuated by government agencies and social media to reveal how the public can better protect trees and nature in their community and elsewhere. They will also be joined by a conservation biologist and a local FireSmart representative to interpret the FireSmart recommendations for natural landscapes around homes. \nModerated by conservationists Grace Golightly and Creatively United founder Frances Litman. \nCan’t attend the live webinar? Not to worry\, a recording of this event will be sent to all registrants. \nRegister: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_X9mdKbeGQhSvgMRuElYTOA

SUMMARY:Casey and Diana
DESCRIPTION:“Casey” is Casey House in Toronto-Canada’s first hospice for men dying of AIDS. “Diana” is Princess Diana-who visited Casey House in 1991-and changed the world’s attitude towards the disease. Thomas has spent five months in Casey House waiting to die. Now he’s hoping he’ll live long enough to meet the Princess he idolizes. \nWhy I Chose This Play\nAs a gay man\, I lived through this horrific time-so much fear and so little information. We heard stories of hospital staff too frightened to deliver meals to AIDS patients (which was actually the impetus behind the founding of Casey House). Thomas in this play reminds me of so many men who contracted this disease\, facing death with a mixture of anger and sadness-and a helluva lot of snap and flair-! Michael Shamata \nThis production of Casey and Diana is supported in part by a generous gift from Elaine Montgomery and Robert Maitland \nTicket Prices\nPart of your 2025-26 Season Subscription Package All tickets to this show are offered with Pay-What-You-Can Price Options \nURLs:\nFacebook: https://go.evvnt.com/3555250-2?pid=10320\nInstagram: https://go.evvnt.com/3555250-3?pid=10320\nYouTube: https://go.evvnt.com/3555250-4?pid=10320 \nDate and Time: Tue\, 21 Apr 2026 19:30 – Sun\, 17 May 2026 21:30 \nVenue details: Belfry Theatre\, 1291 Gladstone Avenue\, Victoria\, British Columbia\, V8T 2Y5\, Canada \n  \nCategory: Arts | Performing Arts | Theatre \nPrice:\nAssigned Seating: CAD 60.00
