DESCRIPTION:Attention outdoor enthusiasts! There’s a great opportunity to get outside and help nature at the 2026 Big Backyard BioBlitz. Nature Conservancy Canada began this annual endeavour to involve the public in improving species distribution modelling maps. Simply take photos or record audio\, then upload the files on the iNaturalist app to contribute valuable species location data. And this year\, you can take part in the BioBlitz around the wetland on the Sooke Region Museum’s grounds! \nMembers of the public wishing to participate at the museum must first attend an orientation session on Saturday 25 July at 10am. There\, ecologist Stacey Kinder will teach about protecting this sensitive ecosystem. SUMMARY:Seed Saving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to grow\, harvest\, clean and store seeds with the knowledgeable Rebecca Jehn at Welland Orchard \n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop Description\nIn this workshop we will begin by discussing each participant’s farming and seed saving experience and top goals for this workshop\, before launching into learning how to grow\, harvest\, clean and store seeds. \nWe will also talk about seed history and biology\, look at and talk about equipment used for cleaning and processing seed and have a hands on demo of cleaning and processing of seed heads supplied by a local farmer. \nThis workshop will finish with a question and answer period to make sure nothing is missed\, as well a chance to peruse some of the books in Rebecca’s collection. \nThe formal part of this workshop will run from 10am-12pm. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch with them and continue the conversation about seed saving\, ask additional questions and have more time to look though the books from 12pm-1pm \nBe sure to come dressed for the elements as this workshop will be held outdoors. \nGetting here\nAs there is limited parking available at the orchard\, please bike\, walk\, bus or carpool if possible. We are located right on the galloping goose\, and you are welcome to bring bikes into the orchard to lock them up safely. \nIf you are driving\, there are 8 parking spots located at the end of stancil lane\, 1 of which will be reserved as accessible for the duration of the workshop. Please be mindful of our neighbours and do not park in the large driveway on the south side of the street. Additional parking can be found along the street on High St and Eaton Ave. \nAbout the Instructor\nRebecca Jehn farmed in the Greater Victoria area for over 35 years\, growing produce\, seeds and bedding plants for sale at the Moss Street Market\, as well as making and selling preserves from her produce. She began saving seeds when she noticed some of her favorite varieties were disappearing from the seed catalogs and she didn’t want to lose the ability to grow those varieties which often tasted better and were usually hardier.She only grew open pollinated seeds most of them heirloom varieties. Her main focus has been to share her knowledge\, teaching workshops and seminars on growing\, harvesting and preserving techniques as well as mentoring potential young farmers on the business and marketing aspects of farming. When she began saving seed it was mostly for farm use and friends but soon realized that seeds grown locally become adapted to localconditions\, producing better than others so she decided to share her seed with the local population and shortly after Rebecca’s Garden Seeds was born. Now after more than 35 years of farming Rebecca has retired but still wants to share her experience and knowledge with other farmers and backyard gardeners. Helping with food security and preserving our seed knowledge for future generations. \n\nHow to Register for this Event\nThis workshop is in person only. Please dress appropriately for all types of weather\, as the workshop will be hosted outside in the orchard. \nThis workshop is available on a sliding scale basis. Please pay in alignment with your financial privilege to help us continue to offer tickets in this way\, and support those in your community with less financial privilege to attend our workshops. There are also a limited number of by donation tickets available for this workshop\, these tickets are prioritized for folks who are low income and would otherwise be unable to attend. If the ticket cost is a barrier for you\, please utilize these tickets. \nLifeCycles Project Society is always working to learn more about\, and breakdown\, barriers that may exist in accessing our programming. There is a gravel/dirt path sloping downward from the gate that leads to a wide flat grassy area with picnic table seating. If you are coming from the Galloping Goose entrance\, which also has a latching unlocked gate\, you will find a gravel/dirt path that slopes upward to the wide flat seating area. The steepness of the path varies throughout the Orchard and is steepest at the top of the Orchard closer to the Stancil Lane entrance\, and at the bottom between the Galloping Goose trail and the Orchard entrance. The pathway from the Galloping Goose to the entrance to the Orchard has several sharp turns. \nThe Orchard has a single-stall gender-neutral composting toilet facility on site with ramp access and transfer bars which will be open during the workshop. The composting toilet is located below the flat area and toward the Galloping Goose entrance. Hand sanitizer is available inside the toilet. \nThe workshop will be held outside rain or shine\, please dress appropriately for the weather. The seating provided is picnic benches. Please feel free to bring a cushion or your own folding chair\, a limited number of cushions are available at the orchard. \nThere is access to potable water on site. DESCRIPTION:The Unist’ot’en clan continue to fight against industrial development on their sovereign Yintah. \nInstead of two work parties\, they are doing one extra long one\, August 1st until September 7th\, and can use help. \nAll skills are welcome but especially: skilled tradespeople (plumbing\, electrical\, carpenters\, etc)\, dishwashers\, mechanics\, herbalists\, cooks\, chainsaw operators\, and people familiar with off-grid systems. DESCRIPTION:We’re collaborating with Food Day Canada\, the Island Chefs’ Collaborative\, and the West Shore Arts Council to celebrate local food and turn local ingredients into a sharing table of international dishes. \nBring a dish to share that’s inspired by your culture\, your travels\, or a recipe you’ve always wanted to try -made (as much as possible) with ingredients grown\, raised\, baked\, or crafted close to home. Think: BC berries in a Persian syrup\, local salmon in a Japanese-style rice bowl\, Island veggies in a Mexican street corn salad\, farm eggs in a Spanish tortilla\, fresh herbs in Lebanese tabbouleh. \nWhy you’ll love it:\n* A delicious way to meet neighbours (kids welcome\, picky eaters welcome)\n* A “taste around the world” buffet – with a local twist\n*Recipe swapping\, story sharing\, and a table that feels like our community \nHow to join:\n* Bring: A dish that’s large enough for 8 to 12 people to share (main\, side salad\, dessert – anything goes) using as many local ingredients as possible. We’d also like you to bring your own plates\, cutlery\, cloth napkins\, beverages and take-home containers to enjoy any leftovers (and help us keep this event as waste-free and affordable as possible). Outdoor time and games included – all on the grounds and in the historic buildings of the Sooke Region Museum. \nMornings will be filled with skill-building activities\, while the afternoons will focus on music and theatre.\nSkill building will focus on homesteading – like the people who lived in Moss Cottage – making butter\, bread\, jam\, sewing. These are life skills just as important today as they were in 1902! Learning to source materials locally\, we will practice reducing waste and experience how historical skills are relevant to modern-day life. \nPerformance exercises and activities will be led by Katrina Kadoski in the afternoons. With her extensive acting and music experience\, Katrina will show participants how to embody their characters informed by the morning’s historical skill building activities. She’s followed by Juno-nominated saxophonist Ryan Oliver\, a Western Canadian Music Awards “Jazz Musician of the Year” nominee who has toured the globe with The Shuffle Demons and co-leads The Cookers Quintet. \nWednesday brings a Core Faculty Showcase\, gathering the workshop’s instrumentalists for a freewheeling collaborative set\, followed by celebrated singer-composer Brian Tate. SUMMARY:Solastalgia: Poetry and Prose Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join RAVEN\, in partnership with Urban Ink\, for the next instalments of our Solastalgia Community Event Series. \n\n\n\n\nThis series has had so much interest and requests to host in other cities\, so to answer that call\, the next two sessions will be taking place in Vancouver\, B.C. \nThis chapter of the series will explore the theme of Ecosystems of Care. We’ll consider the relationships and practices within communities that sustain us through times of ecological and social change. Together\, we will reflect on how care flows between people\, land\, water\, more-than-human kin\, and future generations. And we’ll ask ourselves what it means to nurture resilience in an era of climate uncertainty. \nFor this session\, on August 16\, 2026\, there will be a Solastalgia-themed poetry and prose workshop facilitated by natasha gauthier\, a mixed settler and reconnecting Indigenous multidisciplinary writer and visual artist. Through guided writing prompts\, reflection\, and discussion\, participants will explore their relationship to place\, climate change\, grief\, belonging\, and collective care. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy hit-music with this interactive percussion experience! Sticks and Stone invites you hit\, shake and scrape along as you join them in becoming a Percussion Super Hero! Typically reserved for the back of a symphony orchestra\, you will be surprised to see a large classical marimba in a performance full of humour and antics! \n“The marimba band you didn’t know you needed. Pop\, folk\, global rhythms—and a stage presence that’s part concert\, part theatre. THE marimba band of Alberta (maybe Canada!). Their rosewood vibes joyful will have you swaying.”\n-Micheal Hrycun\, Foundry Events \nSticks and Stone Percussion has been bringing music to the streets\, concert halls\, schools\, birthday parties and celebration events of the Edmonton area since 2017. They play a little bit of every style of music and performances have included playing for the CBC Turkey Drive\, the Edmonton Fringe Festival\, the Epcor Christmas Gala\, the ATB/TELUS Barbeque and the City of Edmonton New Year’s Eve in the Winspear. Their 2020 debut album “Marimba Around the World” mixed folk music from 15 countries with pop\, rock and jazz. They have played for connect audiences from ages 2 to 95 and might equally present as punk or polite. They most widely with audiences by playing covers of music they might recognize\, including Disney and video-game. Bring your old confidential documents for safe shredding by Record X Press Shredding and support end-of-life care in our community. \n\n\n\nJoin us on Saturday\, September 19\, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Reynolds Secondary School. \nShredding is by donation\, with a suggested donation of $10 per box. We take cash and credit card. \nAll proceeds support Victoria Hospice through our partnership with the Royal Victoria Marathon. \nEvery donation will be matched by McCall Gardens up to $5000!
