But this time feels different. \nThat’s why we’ve organized this webinar to discuss this new landscape\, and what these developments mean for Indigenous rights\, environmental protections\, and democratic decision-making. Featuring a panel of experts\, we’ll examine why and how governments are advancing major extractive projects in this new legal and political environment\, and\, importantly\, discuss ways communities can respond and take action. \nAbout the speakers: \nDr. Rosemary Collard and Dr. Jess Dempsey are economic geographers and political ecologists at Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia respectively. Together\, they run the Extinction Paradox research program\, which studies the political economy of environmental change and looks to identify the political economic drivers of extinction and loss of wild animal abundance. \nGeorgia Lloyd-Smith is a staff lawyer and Marine Program Lead at West Coast Environmental Law. She works to protect coastal and ocean spaces and believes in the power of the ocean to heal itself. DESCRIPTION:ArtSpring 7:30PM Saturday\nSeptember 26th\n\nTickets available HERE\n\nCan we take meaningful action on climate change without damaging our economy? \nPrime Minister Mark Carney’s current policies seem to represent a major pivot from his earlier\, pre-political concerns about climate change. While he previously championed strict regulations\, carbon taxes\, and mandated phase-outs globally\, his government’s new strategy—outlined in his “Forward Guidance” framework—deliberately prioritizes economic affordability\, national unity\, and energy expansion. \nFor more than two decades\, journalist and author Arno Kopecky has examined the difficult trade-offs that define our relationship with nature.  Kopecky has travelled the globe reporting from the front lines of environmental change\, asking uncomfortable questions about conservation\, climate change\, Indigenous rights\, and energy. DESCRIPTION:A Pay What You Want Community Concert\nwith award-winning singer/songwriter Amy Bishop\n\nAmy Bishop’s voice is a combination of smooth pavement and rough gravel\, with the ability to charm listeners with her sweet tones; yet stun audiences with the ability to hit any high note.\n\nHailing from Calgary\, Amy began her music career around campfires\, at block parties\, and in church choir. Knowing a career in music is no guarantee\, Amy decided to practice other trades\, but her passion for music prevailed\, leading her to collaborations with Moby and opening for April Wine\, Farmer’s Daughter\, and Chris Cummings. Amy has an instinctive ability to craft stories into song and deliver them with sincerity and passion\, all qualities that make her an undeniable Canadian talent.\n\n​ \nAmy “wowed” Canada with her appearance on CTV “The Launch” in 2018. This opened up industry doors as she was quickly signed by both a booking agency and management company.  In March 2019 Amy performed at the prestigious Canadian Screen Awards in Toronto. \n​
