SUMMARY:Hermann's Jazz presents a tribute to Moonlight Sinatra w/ Award-Winning\, World-Touring Vocalist
DESCRIPTION:Known for her clever original lyrics\, timeless style\, and captivating stage presence\, don’t miss West Coast–based jazz artist Angela Verbrugge as she returns to the stage at Hermann’s Friday January 23rd with NYC pianist Ray Gallon\, stellar rhythm section of Detroit-born Louis Rudner and Nanaimo-based Graham Villette. Angela and Ray are celebrating the release of their new album\, In the Wonder of the Night\, a vocal jazz collection of standards and originals that explore how nighttime makes space for romance\, connection\, and contemplation and pays tribute to Moonlight Sinatra – Frank’s atmostpheric and beautiful collaboration of arrangements with Nelson Riddle. They will also cover other Sinatra repertoire and share behind the scenes of both Moonlight Sinatra as well as their own process of creating In the Wonder of the Night – recorded in Vancouver\, mixed in Toronto and mastered in NYC. \nPossessing a “winsome\, brightly-burnished\, pliable voice\, ample emotional intelligence\, and conspicuously good taste… now is the time for Angela Verbrugge”\, writes Andrew Gilbert for JazzTimes Magazine. Inspired by Carmen McRae\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Anita O’Day\, and other jazz vocalists popular in 1940s/50s\, Angela brings tenderness\, wit\, and passion to her interpretations of standards. Her originals are inspired by the classic Gershwin–Cole Porter tradition. Her collaborations include songwriting with Caity Gyorgy\, Ken Fowser\, Nick Hempton\, Neal Miner and Ray Gallon. \nSince 2021\, Angela has performed across Japan\, Taiwan\, Hong Kong\, Türkiye\, England\, Germany\, Luxembourg\, Italy\, France\, and from coast-to-coast in Canada. She has won reader polls in JazzTimes and All About Jazz\, released four acclaimed albums on US and German record labels\, and was recently nominated for Jazz Artist of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards. Her music is played by CBC Saturday Night Jazz\, and on prominent jazz programs around the world. Her catalogue has accumulated almost a million streams across music platforms. Verbrugge has shared the stage with leading Canadian jazz artists such as Neil Swainson\, Terry Clarke\, Jim Doxas\, Miles Black\, Jodi Proznick\, Reg Schwager\, Kodi Hutchinson\, Karl Janusska\, Sylvain Gagnon\, and international jazz musicians such as Evan Sherman\, Franck Amsallem\, Julian Schmidt\, Massimiliano Rolff\, Xaver Hellmeier\,Hiroko Mase and Akane Matsumoto. \nAngela will be joined by a wonderful trio: Grammy-nominated New York City pianist Ray Gallon\, alongside two musicians well-known to Victoria audiences… Louis Rudner and Graham Villette. \nRay Gallon is a veteran New York jazz pianist whose expressive\, swinging style bridges bebop tradition and modern creativity who Ahmad Jamal called “extraordinary”. Mentored by the likes of John Lewis\, Hank Jones\, and Jaki Byard\, Gallon has performed worldwide with icons including Ron Carter\, Lionel Hampton\, Art Farmer\, Benny Golson\, Les Paul\, and Wycliffe Gordon\, and has appeared at the White House and Kennedy Center alongside Dizzy Gillespie\, Milt Jackson\, and Joe Williams. An in-demand accompanist in New York and beyond\, he accompanied Jon Hendricks\, Sheila Jordan\, Jane Monheit\, and Chaka Khan. His acclaimed Cellar Live trio albums Grand Company (with Ron Carter and Lewis Nash) and Make Your Move (with David Wong and Kenny Washington) showcase his inventive originals and inspired interpretations of standards. A full-time faculty member at The City College of New York in Harlem\, Gallon has also taught at Juilliard and The New School. Pianist Bill Charlap calls his work “informed\, passionate\, and personal… with a wrought-iron jazz vocabulary.” \nURLs:\nTickets: https://go.evvnt.com/3416852-0?pid=10320\nInstagram: https://go.evvnt.com/3416852-2?pid=10320\nFacebook: https://go.evvnt.com/3416852-3?pid=10320\nBandsintown: https://go.evvnt.com/3416852-4?pid=10320\nYouTube: https://go.evvnt.com/3416852-5?pid=10320\nWebsite: https://go.evvnt.com/3416852-7?pid=10320 \nDate and Time: On Fri\, 23 Jan 2026 19:00 – Fri\, 23 Jan 2026 21:30 \nVenue details: Hermann’s Jazz Club\, 753 View Street\, Victoria\, British Columbia\, V8W 1J9\, Canada \nCategory: Live Music | Jazz \nPrice:\nGeneral Admission: CAD 30.00 \nArtists: Angela Verbrugge\, Ray Gallon\, Louis Rudner\, Graham Villette

SUMMARY:Bach and Khayyam with CONSTANTINOPLE (CANADA)
DESCRIPTION:The ever-popular\, ground-breaking ensemble Constantinople examines two great musical geniuses\, presenting arrangements of some of the most beautiful spiritual songs and arias of JS Bach in dialogue with poems of Omar Khayyam sung in Persian. \nSeparated by time and space\, the two geniuses of Johann Sebastian Bach and Persian mathematician-poet Omar Khayyam were nonetheless among similar heights of greatness. Ensemble Constantinople and soprano Hana Blažiková bring these two visionaries together in dialogue\, intertwining arias by Bach with the contemplative and expressive poetry of Khayyam. \nInspired by the ancient city illuminating the East and West\, Constantinople was founded in 2001 in Montreal by its artistic director\, Kiya Tabassian. \nThe ensemble has 23 albums to its credit on labels Analekta\, Atma\, World Village\, Buda Musique\, Ma Case\, Dreyer Gaido and Glossa. Over the course of the decade\, Constantinople has created 60 works and travelled to more than 290 cities in 57 countries. \n“. . . thoughtful\, shimmering with a thousand colours\, sensual and passionate.” – Dr. Matthias Lang\, from Magazin.klassik.com \nURLs:\nTickets: https://go.evvnt.com/3240407-0?pid=10320\nWebsite: https://go.evvnt.com/3240407-2?pid=10320\nWebsite: https://go.evvnt.com/3240407-3?pid=10320 \nDate and Time: Saturday\, 31 January 2026 at 19:30 – 21:00 \nVenue details: First Church of Christ\, Scientist Victoria\, 1205 Pandora Avenue\, Victoria\, British Columbia\, V8V 3R3\, Canada \nCategory: Arts | Performing Arts | Music \nPrices:\nGeneral Admission: CAD 35.00\,\nUnder 30: CAD 20.00\,\nYouth/Student: CAD 5.00 \nArtists: abels Analekta\, Atma\, World Village\, Buda Musique\, Ma Case\, Dreyer Gaido \, Glossa\, Constantinople

SUMMARY:Extraction Extinction: Ending the Fossil Fuel Era | Online Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Join Amnesty International and Decolonial Solidarity Network for an exciting discussion about how people around the world – including right here in Canada – are fighting to protect the environment and our collective futures by ending public financing for fossil fuel expansion. \nHear from human rights defenders and activists about how public financing of fossil fuel projects harms human rights\,  what we lose by giving billions of dollars to these projects during a time of shrinking services and a cost of living crisis\, and how we can join forces across Canada to defend our right to a healthy environment by ending new public fossil fuel financing. Major fossil fuel projects that could be accelerated under the Carney government are wholly owned by foreign corporations. Ksi Lisims is 100% American-owned and the PRGT pipeline has been backed by American billionaires linked to US President Trump. \nOn Wednesday\, February 4 at 4pm Pacific Time / 7pm EST\, you’re invited to join us for a powerful online discussion featuring Candy Ofime\, Climate Justice Researcher and Advisor of Amnesty International\, and author of the report Extraction Extinction. She will be joined by: \n\nKate Turner\, Coordinator of Decolonial Solidarity Network\n\nThe webinar will be moderated by Tara Scurr\, Climate Justice campaigner for Amnesty International Canada and supported by members of the Climate Justice Advocacy Specialized Team. \nThis is an exciting opportunity to connect with global and national human rights leaders and with one another as we reflect on what UN Secretary General Antonio Guterrez called the ‘madness’ of expanding fossil fuel projects during a climate emergency – and how Canada must show global leadership by immediately ending all public financing of these projects. You’ll leave the webinar with the tools you need to speak with your friends and family about this issue and to convince your MP to speak up in favor of ending Canada’s bankrolling of fossil fuels projects. \nSponsored by Amnesty International\, Decolonial Solidarity Network\, and Amnesty’s volunteer-led Climate Justice Specialized Team. \nRegister for the Event Here »

SUMMARY:The Challenges for the Success of Mark Carney's Government at Home
DESCRIPTION:The Humanist Cafe\nDiscussion Forum \n Free* And Open To All! \n \nWednesday February 4\, 2026 – 7:00-8:30 pm\n Cook Street Activity Center\n 380 Cook St. (Cook St. Village)\, Victoria\n \nLimited free parking and free street parking \n(There are 12 free parking spaces behind the building directly across from The Center which can be accessed from Oscar St.  It is almost always empty in the evenings.)\n\nPlease Use The Side Entrance (beside the construction site)\n Purchase Coffee/Tea nearby at The Moka House – BYO mug! \n \n  \n* * * *\nDiscussion Topic: The Challenges for the Success of Mark Carney’s Government at Home \nPresenter and Moderator:  Barrie Webster\n\nThere has recently been a good deal of favourable press on the achievements of Mark Carney\, especially internationally. The contrast with the American experience is dramatic and Carney’s ability to negotiate with more authoritarian leaders abroad has put Canada on the map. So\, he comes across well as a savvy international economist and negotiator\, but has been criticized in the media for a number of shortcomings at home. \nFurther\, Carney has promised to substantially increase the budget for defence to 5% of GDP. To pay for this\, his government is now proposing cuts to the public service (30\,000 positions – to find $60-B in internal ‘savings’ – 16\,000 positions have been identified to date). Few details are available on what these reductions could mean for specific programs or services. But two departments responsible for Indigenous issues\, plus National Defence\, Public Safety\, Women and Gender Equality\, and federal research granting councils have been identified for their “essential nature” and therefore cushioned from such drastic action. \n[See attached pdf of article from the Globe and Mail – no URL because it’s behind a paywall] \nThe Parliamentary Budget Officer has released a report that said the departments are not providing information about the impact of cuts on services to Canadians. \nhttps://www.pbo-dpb.ca/en/additional-analyses–analyses-complementaires/BLOG-2526-014--pbo-information-requests-regarding-planned-reductions-under-2025-comprehensive-expenditure-review-fo–demandes-information-dpb-concernant-reductions-prevues-dans-cadre-examen-exhaustif-depenses-2025-sui#antn_3 \nCanadians have traditionally taken many services for granted as part of the public system\, such as the food inspection agency: \nhttps://www.nationalobserver.com/2026/01/28/news/cfia-job-cuts-food-safety-concerns \nand the agricultural research station network: \nhttps://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/lacombe-agriculture-research-centre-closure-9.7065873 \nhttps://www.nfu.ca/cuts-to-aafc-are-disastrous-for-canada-says-national-farmers-union \nhttps://www.seedworld.com/canada/2026/01/29/what-we-know-so-far-about-the-reported-cuts-to-aafc-staffing-research-stations/ \nto state only two examples. In addition\, environmentally aware Canadians are concerned about the lack of attention to climate change in recent federal government policies. \nhttps://mailchi.mp/reclimate/the-view-from-here-13881204 \nQuestions: \n1. What is your opinion of the perceived success of the Carney government affected by the domestic policy decisions and proposed cuts in funding? \n2. In view of the enthusiastic endorsement of Pierre Poilievre as the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada\, what is the likelihood of a Conservative win if an election is called this year? \n3. Where do you see spending on the public service to be excessive? How do you see such choices aligning with humanists’ view that science based decision making is essential? \n4. Which public service could you do without? \n\nSee you there!  Bring somebody.\n* Donations gratefully accepted.\nwww.vsha.ca

SUMMARY:Salt Spring Island Forum Presents Charity Weeden: Moonshot
DESCRIPTION:Humanity is set to return to the Moon—with Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen due to fly around it soon!  In anticipation of that historic voyage\, the Salt Spring Forum is delighted to welcome Charity Weeden\, a formerly of NASA. \nCharity Weeden is perfectly qualified to help us understand the dramatic increase in space activities. Indeed\, there were just 2\,000 operational satellites in orbit in 2015\, and today there are more than 13\,000! \nThere’s an awful lot going on in space\, and Charity Weeden is the perfect person to situate us. Please join the Salt Spring Forum in a timely discussion about opportunities and risks on the “final frontier”.
