SUMMARY:Fifty Fifty Arts Collective presents Mending Gently
DESCRIPTION:The Fifty Fifty Arts Collective presents Mending Gently\, a solo art exhibition by Jenna Short. Jenna is a Dakelh artist from the Saik’uz First Nation. She has always felt connected to forests\, oceans\, and the land\, which became grounding spaces in her life and provided a safe blanket and place to breathe during times of uncertainty. \nThis connection later influenced Jenna’s art practice. She often works with figurative and landscape subjects through oil painting\, watercolour\, and wood carvings. Her art practice heavily includes plywood\, with the material acting as colonized and commercialized pieces of land that are being returned to the body. According to Short\, Mending Gently explores themes of feeling disconnected from place and the effects of the industrialized society on the natural body. \nWhere: The Fifty Fifty Arts Collective\, 2516 Douglas St.\, until Sept. 10th

SUMMARY:Summer on the Yintah
DESCRIPTION:The Unist’ot’en clan continue to fight against industrial development on their sovereign Yintah. \nInstead of two work parties\, they are doing one extra long one\, August 1st until September 7th\, and can use help. \nAll skills are welcome but especially: skilled tradespeople (plumbing\, electrical\, carpenters\, etc)\, dishwashers\, mechanics\, herbalists\, cooks\, chainsaw operators\, and people familiar with off-grid systems. If you aren’t sure if you are ready for a trip like this\, we encourage you to fill out the registration form and have a chat with our volunteers. They can give you an idea of what things are like day to day\, and help you see how you fit in. \nIf you can’t join this year but wish to help\, the Camp is especially needing: \n\nDonations of flights for supporters (etransfer\, PayPal\, or Aeroplan points via the Air Canada gift card system) or gas money\nPlaces to stay on the way to and from camp\, anywhere from Cache Creek to Prince George\nReliable vehicles to borrow for the drive to and from Camp from Vancouver\nPeople to drive (especially with their own vehicles) to and from Camp from Vancouver\nDonations to the grocery fund for the Work Party\n\nPlease read https://unistoten.camp/come-to-camp/preparing-for-your-visit/ and then register through https://unistoten.camp/registration/. To arrange to sponsor a flight\, donate to the supply fund\, offer a place to stay\, or volunteer as a driver\, please write to unistoten.village@gmail.com and a volunteer will get back to you as soon as possible. \nAllies in Vancouver are part of a campaign to recall MLA Dallas Brodie. Dallas was removed from the BC Conservative Party last year over her statements about residential school survivors and is now using her office as an MLA to forward a far-right agenda. The grassroots campaign was accepted by Elections BC and has until July 20 to deliver 13\,000 signatures to Victoria. Find them at “recallbrodie” on Facebook and Instagram and at www.recallbrodie.com.

SUMMARY:Creative Cottage Camp at the Sooke Region Museum
DESCRIPTION:Creative Cottage Camp\n\nIf your kids enjoy visiting the Sooke Region Museum for school tours\, they’ll LOVE our summer camp! \nFor 2 weeks\, kids will participate in skill-building workshops in the mornings with theatrical and musical activities in the afternoons. Outdoor time and games included – all on the grounds and in the historic buildings of the Sooke Region Museum. \nMornings will be filled with skill-building activities\, while the afternoons will focus on music and theatre.\nSkill building will focus on homesteading – like the people who lived in Moss Cottage – making butter\, bread\, jam\, sewing. These are life skills just as important today as they were in 1902! Learning to source materials locally\, we will practice reducing waste and experience how historical skills are relevant to modern-day life. \nPerformance exercises and activities will be led by Katrina Kadoski in the afternoons. With her extensive acting and music experience\, Katrina will show participants how to embody their characters informed by the morning’s historical skill building activities. Have you ever used a washboard as a musical instrument? \nOn the last day of the two-week camp the children will perform a bit of what they’ve learned and created. \nFor the best experience\, camp will be limited to maximum 10 children. Register early to avoid disappointment! \nCost: \n$700 – 2 weeks of camp per child \n$650 – each additional child from same family (use coupon code SIBLING to apply discount) \nCancellation Policy: \nCamp fees are non-refundable: \nRegistration: \nOpen now – online\, by phone\, in person.

Young Recital Hall with three nights of exceptional jazz\, presented by the UJAM Summer Jazz Workshop\, a five day intensive led by some of the finest jazz educators in Victoria. SUMMARY:Dog Walk for Wolves
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Victoria on International Wolf Day for a dog walk with a purpose – Come and learn more about the importance of BC wolves and the threats they face. \n\n\nHosted by Pacific Wild\, this free\, family-friendly event explores the existing link between dogs and their closest living relatives. \nMeet us at the Cameron Bandshell in Beacon Hill Park with your pup (or just yourself!) for pre-walk activities such as a wolf howl competition with a fun prize for the winner\, a photo booth for you and your furry friends\, a sign making station to show your support for the conservation of B.C. wolves\, and an information booth where you can learn more about the B.C. wolf cull. \nWe will walk together at 6:15pm from Beacon Hill Park to the Legislative Fountain for a group photo\, including a quick stop at the Victoria Centennial Fountain to visit the Bronze Wolf statue. \nBring your dog. Learn about his or her wild K9 cousin. Wolves hold ecosystems together — and right now\, they’re being killed by government programs and under-regulated hunting and trapping. One walk at a time\, our community of dog lovers can help change that.

SUMMARY:Solastalgia: Poetry and Prose Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join RAVEN\, in partnership with Urban Ink\, for the next instalments of our Solastalgia Community Event Series. \n\n\n\n\nThis series has had so much interest and requests to host in other cities\, so to answer that call\, the next two sessions will be taking place in Vancouver\, B.C. \nThis chapter of the series will explore the theme of Ecosystems of Care. We’ll consider the relationships and practices within communities that sustain us through times of ecological and social change. Together\, we will reflect on how care flows between people\, land\, water\, more-than-human kin\, and future generations. And we’ll ask ourselves what it means to nurture resilience in an era of climate uncertainty. \nFor this session\, on August 16\, 2026\, there will be a Solastalgia-themed poetry and prose workshop facilitated by natasha gauthier\, a mixed settler and reconnecting Indigenous multidisciplinary writer and visual artist. Through guided writing prompts\, reflection\, and discussion\, participants will explore their relationship to place\, climate change\, grief\, belonging\, and collective care. Whether you’re an experienced writer or simply curious about writing your thoughts out\, this workshop will offer a welcoming space to connect with others and express what it means to live in a changing world. \nGet your tickets for the poetry and prose workshop now! \nLocation: Jim Green House Studio\, 1885 Venables St\, Vancouver\, BC \nAccessibility: The Studio space is the lower level of the heritage home\, accessible from the ground floor. It is slightly elevated; however\, there is a ramp down from the main door. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.ca/e/solastalgia-poetry-and-prose-workshop-tickets-1993026711545

SUMMARY:Builders of the Dunsmuir Legacy
DESCRIPTION:On September 30\, 1890\, the Vancouver World reported that Joan Dunsmuir had moved into her new $500\,000 residence. Craigdarroch Castle’s scale and grandeur were unprecedented in Victoria\, inspiring admiration for its craftsmanship while drawing attention to the wealth and power it so boldly displayed. Although scores of city dwellers worked on the construction project\, many key tradesmen came from elsewhere. Several remained in Victoria\, building their reputations on the skills showcased at Craigdarroch. Drawing on research from the book\, Craigdarroch Reconstructed\, castle curator Jenny Seeman will introduce us to some of the architects\, contractors\, and craftsmen behind the iconic Dunsmuir homes that still shape Victoria’s skyline.
