SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Canadians (still) care about climate change
DESCRIPTION:With economic uncertainty weighing on Canadians\, many wonder\, have climate advocates lost the public to other priorities? \nNew national research from Re.Climate and Abacus Data shows that despite affordability pressures\, Canadians still care about climate change—and talking about it actually increases support for renewable energy and preparing for climate impacts. \nThere are\, however\, still warning signs. Compared to 2023\, more Canadians think climate change’s impacts are exaggerated and there’s more evidence that conspiracy thinking is playing a role in shaping public perceptions. \nBut the fact remains: Canadians want to build out renewables\, they would feel more pride in the country if it was a renewable energy super power and want to see politicians keep their climate promises. Public support hasn’t disappeared\, so we shouldn’t act like it has. \nIn this webinar\, David Coletto\, founder and CEO of Abacus Data and Re.Climate Senior Advisor Dr. Louise Comeau will share findings from new research on how Canadians are thinking about climate change\, including how hopeful they are about solutions\, and how perspectives differ across regions and groups. \nThey will also explore what this means for communicators and what narratives that resonate with Canadians. \nRegister: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_VrruNPuSR8Se91co9-pt1w#/registration

SUMMARY:Contemplative Forestry with Dr. Jason Brown
DESCRIPTION:The current conversation about forests and forestry is often polarized\, and these strong feelings about forest management are rooted in our worldviews. Each of us sees forests through the lens of our culture and knowledge paradigm. \n“Contemplative” has many meanings but is often associated with silent meditation and spirituality. A contemplative forestry however\, does not take a “hands off” view of forest management\, rather it 1) values manual work as a form of spiritual practice\, 2) is willing to allow forests to “speak” for themselves\, 3) is humble enough to admit that there are some aspects of life we don’t have words or concepts for\, and 4) sees forestry as a mutually beneficial\, place-based vocation. \nJason teaches courses in religious studies and ecological humanities for the department of Global Humanities at SFU. Since 2023\, he has piloted an ecological chaplaincy program at Simon Fraser University which seeks to bring contemplative practice to build resilience to climate anxiety and ecological grief. Jason is an Affiliate Forest Profession with the Forest Professionals British Columbia (FPBC). \nRegister: https://www.ecoforestry.ca/events-tours/2026/2/11/contemplative-forestry-with-dr-jason-brown

Tosca is a gripping tale of love\, lust\, murder\, and political intrigue. With Puccini’s richly romantic score\, this new production (a co-production with Vancouver Opera) revisits the timeless story of Floria Tosca\, a beautifully tragic opera singer caught between love and the machinations of power. A masterpiece of the operatic canon\, Tosca resonates deeply with its exploration of art versus authority\, delivering visceral drama and lyrical beauty. Brett Polegato returns to Victoria in the role of Scarpia..” – Artistic Director Brenna Corner\, Pacific Opera Victoria \nPuccini’s Tosca is one of the most iconic operas ever written\, and its dramatic power has left a lasting mark on pop culture. The opera’s gripping story of love\, jealousy\, and political betrayal has appeared in numerous films and TV shows\, including Quantum of Solace\, where Bond attends a performance of Tosca during a pivotal scene. Its famous arias—“Vissi d’arte\,” “E lucevan le stelle\,” and “Recondita armonia”—have become shorthand for operatic passion and have been featured in everything from The Sopranos to Captain America: The Winter Soldier\, cementing Tosca as a cultural touchstone far beyond the opera house.

Through honest conversation\, the panel will reflect on hair as a site of growth and transformation\, a vessel of legacy passed through generations\, and a space where hard truths (such as hair loss\, alopecia\, and medical realities) are often carried quietly. \nThis conversation moves beyond beauty standards to centre hair as part of life itself: how it shapes identity\, how it connects us to culture and ancestry\, and how it evolves alongside our stories. \nIn partnership with the Royal BC Museum and facilitated by Assetou Coulibaly\, this panel creates space for reflection\, learning\, and collective understanding. We invite audiences to listen\, unlearn\, and honour the many stories held in our crowns. \nThe evening includes light snacks and drinks. \nStay tuned for the panellists to be officially announced. \nThe Story of Our Crowns is a heartfelt production from Reverie Collective\, a full-service event planning and consulting company rooted in sustainability\, cultural storytelling\, and community connection. Founders Assetou Coulibaly\, Haley Johnson\, and Erika Renfrew curate from intimate gatherings to grand affairs\, thoughtfully designing with eco-conscious practices\, collaborating with local partners\, and creating experiences that leave lasting memories without unnecessary waste. Reverie Collective is rooted in love for people\, community\, and our Earth. Beyond planning\, we offer consulting services to help individuals\, brands\, and organizations reimagine how they gather—crafting celebrations that are as mindful as they are magical.

SUMMARY:Repair Cafe West Shore and Gardening Swap and Shop
DESCRIPTION:What do you do with a broken lamp or a pair of pants that need to be mended? Toss ’em? No way! Bring them to the Repair Cafe\, where our fantastic volunteer repair team can assess and more than likely help you get your item repaired for FREE or By Donation. And for those who want to give DIY a try\, there will be tools and materials on hand for you to work on fixing some things yourself! \nThis Repair Cafe is paired with a Gardening Swap and Shop where folks can bring pots and garden tools that are clean and still in good working order\, and looking for new homes for the season. \nSpecial Notes: We DO NOT accept gas-powered items (for repair or the swap and shop). We also ask that you make sure your item(s) are wiped down/cleaned before requesting a repair (we don’t want our Handyfolk needing to clean out dirty vacuums before they can try to repair them for you). \nGot the tools\, talent and some time?\nIf you’re a Handy Superhero like our mascot Reggie the Wrench Guy\, we’d love to have you join our righteous repair quest. Repair Cafe West Shore could use more handy volunteers and we’re looking for local residents with different skills who can serve as repair experts during our Repair Cafe gatherings. SUMMARY:A Place Where I Belong Victoria Screening
DESCRIPTION:Victoria folks\, please join us for this documentary screening. Entrance is by donation\, which also means it can be free. Everyone is welcome. There will be a post screening Q&A discussion with local experts and filmmakers. This event is hosted by Community Living BC’s South Island Community Council. \nSynopsis \nFacing a system that does not fully see them as human\, six 2SLGBTQIA+ people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD) work to be seen\, to love\, and to be free through Connecting Queer* Communities\, a bold program that is at risk of ending. Through CQC\, the participants find safety and support while learning about their sexual feelings and gender identity. People with I/DD are often left out of queer communities because caregivers may feel uncomfortable with their sexuality\, and they are often kept apart from society\, which limits their chances to understand and express their queer identity. CQC shows how inclusion can change lives and helps create a world where everyone can find a place they belong. \n*Queer is a word some people use to describe themselves if their feelings\, gender\, or who they love is different from what society expects. It can include people who are gay\, lesbian\, bisexual\, transgender\, non-binary\, and others. \nOur panelists will be announced as they are confirmed. \n6:30pm – Doors open \n7:00pm – Film starts \n8:00pm – Panel Discussion with director Rheanna Toy and members of the film \nThe STORY TO ACTION program would like to thank our funders for making this event possible.

SUMMARY:Restoration of Our Past and Future: Towards a Way of Life (Free talk)
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Richard Heba to learn how we can all participate in the respectful rebalancing of global systems and human communities though big and small actions. \nThirty years ago\, Continuing Studies at UVic identified a training gap in the developing field of Restoration. Well ahead of others\, a unique program of holistic restoration blending science\, social sciences\, and the humanities emerged. From politics to plant ecology\, we invited all to participate whatever their background. We included practical experience in the field and in the human community. \nToday\, global systems of water (hydrosphere)\, air (atmosphere)\, life (biosphere) and land (geosphere) are widely out of balance as a fifth system humanity (sociosphere) robs energy and resources. Pushing aside the laws of nature\, our present system alters global climates and leads to the catastrophic depletion of the diversity of life. \nHolistic Restoration presents a way of life\, to bring humanity into equilibrium with the earth!
