SUMMARY:Protecting Trees\, Dispelling Myths
DESCRIPTION:While many celebrate a succession of sunny days\, the topic turns serious when fish-bearing streams run dry and forests\, trees and gardens wither under the extremes of drought. \nWater restrictions have limited what farmers and industry formerly took for granted and in many parts of BC the situation has already proven deadly. \nAre we putting too much emphasis on targetting trees as a fire threat while we trustingly leave our highly flammable\, plastic-laden vehicles parked in or next to our residences? \nIn celebration of Earth Week and in honour of our urban and established forests\, Creatively United presents a free webinar/conversation and Q&A with some of BC’s leading experts on tree preservation in light of a changing climate and the threat of fire. \nLearn how to discern truth from half-truth (or fiction)\, protect and preserve trees\, your community\, home and loved ones from the growing threat of fire in an era of climate uncertainty. \nHerb Hammond\, forest ecologist\, professional forester\, author; Rachel Holt\, independant ecologist\, professional biologist; and Dave Daust\, forester\, landscape analyst will dispel some of the myths perpetuated by government agencies and social media to reveal how the public can better protect trees and nature in their community and elsewhere. They will also be joined by a conservation biologist and a local FireSmart representative to interpret the FireSmart recommendations for natural landscapes around homes. \nModerated by conservationists Grace Golightly and Creatively United founder Frances Litman. \nCan’t attend the live webinar? Not to worry\, a recording of this event will be sent to all registrants. \nRegister: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_X9mdKbeGQhSvgMRuElYTOA

SUMMARY:Casey and Diana
DESCRIPTION:“Casey” is Casey House in Toronto-Canada’s first hospice for men dying of AIDS. “Diana” is Princess Diana-who visited Casey House in 1991-and changed the world’s attitude towards the disease. Thomas has spent five months in Casey House waiting to die. Now he’s hoping he’ll live long enough to meet the Princess he idolizes. \nWhy I Chose This Play\nAs a gay man\, I lived through this horrific time-so much fear and so little information. We heard stories of hospital staff too frightened to deliver meals to AIDS patients (which was actually the impetus behind the founding of Casey House). Thomas in this play reminds me of so many men who contracted this disease\, facing death with a mixture of anger and sadness-and a helluva lot of snap and flair-! Michael Shamata \nThis production of Casey and Diana is supported in part by a generous gift from Elaine Montgomery and Robert Maitland \nTicket Prices\nPart of your 2025-26 Season Subscription Package All tickets to this show are offered with Pay-What-You-Can Price Options \nURLs:\nFacebook: https://go.evvnt.com/3555250-2?pid=10320\nInstagram: https://go.evvnt.com/3555250-3?pid=10320\nYouTube: https://go.evvnt.com/3555250-4?pid=10320 \nDate and Time: Tue\, 21 Apr 2026 19:30 – Sun\, 17 May 2026 21:30 \nVenue details: Belfry Theatre\, 1291 Gladstone Avenue\, Victoria\, British Columbia\, V8T 2Y5\, Canada \n  \nCategory: Arts | Performing Arts | Theatre \nPrice:\nAssigned Seating: CAD 60.00

SUMMARY:Advocating for Climate Solutions Through Public Policy: Lunch and Learn
DESCRIPTION:Learn about climate adaptation in BC and the role of public policy in addressing risks that extend beyond individual action. \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a special Lunch & Learn in honour of Earth Day. Policy problems are complex\, often contested\, issues that demand public policy action rather than just individual solutions. What problems have remained largely hidden and unaddressed in British Columbia policy and planning contexts? Drawing on theme on Earth Day\, we will explore questions of individual versus government responsibility through local examples of climate change and adaption such as extreme heat\, wildfires\, and risk response. The aim is to better understand climate adaption and how to advocate on behalf of policy problems. \nThis is an in-person and online event. \nPlease register for the Virtual Attendee ticket to recieve the Zoom link \nIn person attendees are welcome to bring their lunch and eat while listening to the presentation. \nPresenter \nAndréanne Doyon is an Associate Professor in the School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University\, and the Associate Dean Undergraduate for the Faculty of Environment. She is a Registered Professional Planner and a Member of the Canadian Institute of Planners. Her field of study primarily revolves around planning\, climate change\, and resilience. Her research focuses on how cities and regions can adapt and transform to respond to environmental and social challenges. Recently this included planning for extreme heat\, alternative approaches to costal adaptation\, and nature-based infrastructure in rural and Indigenous communities.

SUMMARY:Cable Bay Public Hearing
DESCRIPTION:The Public Hearing in Nanaimo on the zoning bylaw to change the lands west of the Cable Bay Trail to heavy industrial\, with just a small buffer\, continues this Wednesday\, April 22nd\, at 7pm. On EARTHDAY. \nLast Thursday\, there were some 500 people\, 200 in the auditorium and 300 in the ante-chamber. 95%  wanted to ensure that the beauty and nature of the Cable Bay area is preserved. \nThis coming Wednesday\, April 22nd\, at 7pm – on EARTHDAY – council could potentially vote to approve the rezoning\, and thereby to approve clearing 7400 trees\, with all their wildlife\, and to approve heavy industrial uses with all their noise\, odours\, and a pipe to carry toxic runoff into the ocean. \nOne of the councillors\, Tyler Brown\, can not attend for personal reasons\, so our goal is to have as many people as possible speak at the microphone or by telephone\, to keep it going until 11pm\, so that the vote happens later in council when Councillor Brown can be present. It would not be right to make such a hugely impactful decision without all the councillors present. \nThe Snuneymuxw First Nation has  voiced very strong opposition. They have not been able to complete their discussions with Harmac/Nanaimo Forest Products\, or reached agreement over significant archaeological sites in the area. Proceeding with rezoning before real First Nations consultation creates legal risk for the City and fails to honour the duty to consult that is owed to the Snuneymuxw people\, on whose traditional territory this development sits. \nIf you can’t come in person\, you can phone in for 3 minutes to share your opinion about the proposed rezoning to heavy industrial. Tune into the livestream on television (Rogers)\, and call 250-755-4455 at 7pm. \nSome of us want no rezoning at all\, to keep all the land forested and natural. Others are willing to support a compromise of some kind. \nAll of us want the proposed zoning bylaw to be rejected. \nIf you can make it\, please come\, and celebrate EARTHDAY together. \nBring signs simply saying EARTHDAY. \nIf you can’t come\, phone in. We need as many people as possible to stand up for nature and wildlife. They don’t have a voice. We need to be their voice\, on EARTHDAY\, and every day. \n \nYou can read the 900+ written submissions here: https://www.nanaimo.ca/docs/property-development/development-applications/public-hearing-docs—ongoing/ra503-950-phoenix-way—submissions_redacted.pdf  The window for written submissions closed last Thursday. \nClick here to view the Public Hearing agenda and watch the live video. The video will become available once the meeting has started. Click here and scroll down for the video link: https://www.nanaimo.ca/your-government/city-council/council-meetings/public-hearings \nTo Call-In During the Public Hearing:  \n\nWatch the meeting livestream and call in when the item you wish to speak to is being presented. Note\, there will be up to a 60 second delay in the livestream. \nCall in using the phone number (250-755-4455) displayed onscreen during the meeting. You will be put on hold until it’s your turn to speak.\nCalls will be answered in the order they are received.\nWhen it’s your turn to speak\, staff will unmute your call and announce that you are the next speaker.\nState your name and address and the item you are speaking to. You will be given three minutes to speak and your comments must be relevant to the item being considered.\nPlease mute all audio devices of the live meeting while you are speaking on the phone to prevent feedback. Do not put your phone on speaker phone.

SUMMARY:Good Relations
DESCRIPTION:Good Relations with Adam Olsen is a public dialogue responding to the growing strain in Crown–Indigenous relations in British Columbia and the rise of anti-Indigenous rhetoric online. At a time when trust is eroding and legal obligations are too often ignored or misrepresented\, this event creates space for thoughtful\, informed\, and respectful conversation. \nHosted by Adam Olsen\, Good Relations brings together authors\, academics\, and activists to explore good relations grounded in law\, lived experience\, and moral responsibility. Through honest dialogue and critical inquiry\, audiences are invited to move beyond slogans and conflict toward understanding\, accountability\, and the hard work of relationship-building. \nAt this April 26th event\, Adam Olsen welcomes George Abbott\, author and BC Treaty Commissioner\, for a conversation about his bestselling book\, Unceded: Understanding British Columbia’s Colonial Past and Why It Matters Now. Drawing on archival research and his firsthand experience inside government\, Abbott traces more than 150 years of Crown–Indigenous relations in British Columbia\, from the province’s refusal to negotiate treaties to the legal and political consequences that shape today’s reconciliation landscape. In dialogue with Adam Olsen\, this event explores Crown-Indigenous relations\, why historical clarity matters now\, and how law\, policy\, and relationships must evolve if British Columbia is to move toward justice\, accountability\, and durable good relations.

We respect the leading role that First Nations are playing as they work to achieve improved public transit within their territories. As rights holders with inherent and constitutionally protected rights to self-determination\, First Nations need to be included at every stage as public transit infrastructure is advanced\, including processes that uphold their free\, prior\, and informed consent and self-determination.\nWe’d love your help in spreading the word – please share this invitation with your networks. \nRegister here: https://westcoastclimateaction.ca/launch-public-transit-alliance-bc-register/

SUMMARY:Orpheus & Eurydice
DESCRIPTION:Based on the famous Greek myth of the musician Orpheus who conquers the spirits of hell using the power of music to bring his love back from the underworld. This production will take Victoria opera lovers into the world of French baroque music and dance. Partnering with Ballet Victoria\, and welcoming back celebrated soprano Suzanne Rigden\, this production not only brings to the Royal Stage a new genre of opera to experience\, it also will see world renowned Ukrainian-Canadian soprano Andriana Chuchman making her debut with Pacific Opera Victoria as Eurydice. \n\nDescend into the underworld of love\, loss\, and longing with Gluck’s Orpheus & Eurydice—a timeless retelling of one of mythology’s most haunting romances. With music that is both ethereal and emotionally charged\, this opera reimagines the ancient tale of Orpheus\, the gifted musician whose songs could move the heavens\, as he dares to defy death itself for the woman he loves. \nWhen Eurydice is torn from life\, Orpheus is granted a single chance to retrieve her—on one heartbreaking condition: he must not look back. Gluck’s revolutionary score strips opera to its emotional core\, trading excess for elegance and clarity. From the aching simplicity of “Che farò senza Euridice?” to the transcendent “Dance of the Blessed Spirits\,” the music pulses with purity and pathos\, creating a world where grief becomes beauty and music becomes salvation. \nOrpheus and Eurydice is a meditation on the power of art\, the fragility of trust\, and the eternal human struggle between hope and despair. It invites audiences into a dreamlike landscape where love can triumph over death—but only at a cost. Poetic\, poignant\, and profoundly moving\, this opera lingers like a half-remembered dream\, echoing long after the final note.
