DESCRIPTION:On September 30\, 1890\, the Vancouver World reported that Joan Dunsmuir had moved into her new $500\,000 residence. Craigdarroch Castle’s scale and grandeur were unprecedented in Victoria\, inspiring admiration for its craftsmanship while drawing attention to the wealth and power it so boldly displayed. Although scores of city dwellers worked on the construction project\, many key tradesmen came from elsewhere. Several remained in Victoria\, building their reputations on the skills showcased at Craigdarroch. Drawing on research from the book\, Craigdarroch Reconstructed\, castle curator Jenny Seeman will introduce us to some of the architects\, contractors\, and craftsmen behind the iconic Dunsmuir homes that still shape Victoria’s skyline.

During his entire personal and political life\, Hawthornthwaite was embroiled in controversy\, scandal\, and mystery. Stains don’t need to spell the end of a garment’s useful life; instead\, they’re an opportunity to add flair to your wardrobe! You can rescue clothes from the landfill and give them a stylish twist at Nature’s Ink\, a textile transformation workshop at the Sooke Region Museum. \nInstructor Chantel Traub is a Calgary-based textile artist currently undertaking a residency at Studio H Canada in Metchosin. Her practice is rooted in nature\, exploring links between art and ecosystems. \nShe’ll bring carbon-negative algae ink and her large collection of hand-cut lino blocks depicting native plants and animals. All you need are pieces of clothing that have small stains to cover or just need an added “flash tattoo”! \nAlternatively\, if you’d rather explore paper media\, Chantel will also provide high-quality cardstock to create hand-stamped cards. \nDrop in at the museum’s events pavilion or pre-register online. \nThis workshop is presented in collaboration with Studio H Canada International Artist Residency located in Metchosin\, BC\, where Chantel Traub is currently an Artist in Residence.

Coastal steamers\, luxury yachts and racing yachts\, tugboats\, RCN war ships and patrol vessels\, and car ferries—and the people who built\, owned\, and sailed them—will all be featured on this new OCS team tour\, which will end at the Naval Memorial. The tour will include the grave of W.H. Langley\, original owner of SV Dorothy—Canada’s oldest sailboat still actively sailing\, now part of the collection of the Maritime Museum of BC and a highlight of this year’s Classic Boat Festival.

DESCRIPTION:Birdsong is a four-event series exploring the connections between music\, birds\, listening\, and the natural world. Audiences are invited to experience birdsong from different perspectives—from listening to birds in their own habitats to discovering how composers and artists have translated the sounds and presence of birds into music. Together\, the events encourage us to listen more closely to the more-than-human world and reconsider our relationship with the environments and species around us. \nPresented as part of Climate and the Arts Celebrating Gaia 2026 Series and the SALT New Music Festival 2026. Young Recital Hall\, University of Victoria\nThe SALT Experiment brings new bird-inspired miniatures into dialogue with music by Vivaldi\, Couperin\, Cage\, Respighi\, Messiaen\, and Hosokawa in an immersive music-theatre journey through the sounds and musical imagination of birds.
