SUMMARY:Hands Off Old Growth! - Rally Oct. 4th
DESCRIPTION:Old growth forests continue to be logged at a breathtaking rate. Our group\, Elders for Ancient Trees\, and the other environmental organizations involved in the United We Stand movement\, have continued to keep up the pressure on government. We have rallied\, visited MLA offices\, written letters\, sung carols (with forest-related lyrics) outside Ravi Parmar’s office. Last November\, we helped to organize the Broken Promises rally\, which highlighted the many promises made by the NDP government concerning old growth protection\, none of which have been kept. Thirteen communities\, right across BC\, participated\, supported by shared materials to help them organize successful events. \nNow it’s time for renewed pressure on the government. Currently\, old growth forests are more under threat than ever. Every day\, roughly 100 soccer fields of old growth are logged\, including areas identified for deferral. That’s over 25\,000 hectares per year\, more than twice the size of Vancouver! As we all know\, once these ancient forest ecosystems are gone\, they’re gone forever. \nThis is why we’re now planning a rally at the BC legislature on October 4\, the day before parliament opens. This rally will be echoed in communities across BC\, from Vancouver Island to Nelson. DESCRIPTION:Preparing for climate change starts with people. \nRe.Climate’s PREPARE Framework shows communicators how to build agency\, care and trust with their audiences the three conditions that turn climate concern into community action. \nCanada’s Changing Climate 2026 report outlines what is coming: more warming and worse fires\, heat events\, floods and droughts. People are already living with these impacts and want to know what can be done. \nOver the last two years\, Re.Climate has worked with ClimateWest\, the regional hub for climate services in the Prairies\, and SevGen Consulting Inc.\, an Indigenous-owned consulting firm\, on the Climate Ready Prairies project\, developing training and guidance on communicating and engaging with communities in Alberta\, Saskatchewan and Manitoba on climate adaptation and preparedness. DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Houghton\, Campaign Director\, of The New Forest Act Project will host a free online training workshop for people who want to help advance the New Forest Act at 6 pm (PST)\, Tuesday\, October 13th. \nGovernment knows about the New Forest Act. Now we need more people helping to advance it. \nThe NFA is not asking government for another program\, planning process\, or new terminology for the existing forestry system. It calls for replacement of BC’s existing forestry laws with a new legal framework that puts ecological functioning\, community decision-making\, and stable local economies into law. \nThat difference is important now that the province is promoting its Working Forest Landscape Model and three-zone approach. It may sound similar to the NFA’s Protect–Restore–Harvest framework\, but the underlying systems are very different. \nThis workshop will cover: \n\nwhat the New Forest Act proposes and why the changes need to be in law;\nhow Protect–Restore–Harvest differs from the government’s three-zone approach;\nkey questions government has asked about the proposal;\nhow to explain the NFA clearly without having to become a forestry expert;\nhow to take the proposal to MLAs\, local governments\, organizations\, and other decision-makers; and\npractical resources people can use to help build support.\n\nRetired forester and NFA co-author Dave Weaver will talk about what Protect–Restore–Harvest means on the ground and will be available to answer technical questions. \nRegister here

Portrait in hand\, wander through the Garden to the Gathering Place to meet representatives from local horticultural organizations at their info tables. Making new connections with your community members is fun\, too! \nThis biodiversity walk will be near the likely future site of Roberts Bank Terminal 2 and the new West Coast Pipeline\, two projects that GSA is actively fighting against to protect the Salish Sea. \nWe’ll be there to talk about these projects\, while an experienced birder from Delta Naturalists Society will lead the walk\, so bring your binoculars\, cameras\, and bird-ID books! \nIf you want to reconnect with nature\, find fresh motivation and inspiration during these troubling times\, and learn how to protect the Salish Sea from marine mammal and bird advocates\, we can’t wait to see you there! \nEvent Details: \nWe will meet in Delta at 9:30 am at 3306 Tsawwassen Drive North. The biodiversity walk is expected to last 2 – 3 hours\, depending on weather conditions and tides. Afterwards\, there is an open invitation for everyone to meet at the Douglas J. Husband Discovery Centre in Ladner for the “Welcoming Back the Birds” event held by the City of Delta\, where Delta Naturalists Society has a display table. This will be a chance to celebrate the birds returning to Delta with themed activities for all the family\, bird films\, and nature booths from 1:30pm – 4pm.

Sometimes the most useful thing we can do is stop\, lie down\, and let something else carry us for a while.\nSacred Soundscape II is 60 minutes of deep release. Gongs\, crystal singing bowls\, chimes\, and tuning forks fill the room\, and there’s nothing you need to do\, fix\, or figure out.\nYou just rest\, and let the sound move through what the mind has been holding onto. Many people leave feeling quieter\, more settled\, and more at home in their own body. You don’t have to have done this before. You just have to show up. \nWhat to bring\nA yoga mat\, pillow\, and blanket\, plus something to support your knees. An eye cover and water are also helpful. Bring whatever helps you feel comfortable lying down for an hour.\nPlease arrive 15–30 minutes early. Doors close at 2:00 so the space stays undisturbed once we begin. Parking is available on site.\nAll sales are final\, but tickets are fully transferable.
