This Labour Day weekend\, celebrate classic boats in the Inner Harbour and then hear “salty tales” in the cemetery! Coastal steamers\, luxury yachts and racing yachts\, tugboats\, RCN war ships and patrol vessels\, and car ferries—and the people who built\, owned\, and sailed them—will all be featured on this new OCS team tour\, which will end at the Naval Memorial. The tour will include the grave of W.H. Langley\, original owner of SV Dorothy—Canada’s oldest sailboat still actively sailing\, now part of the collection of the Maritime Museum of BC and a highlight of this year’s Classic Boat Festival.

DESCRIPTION:Join us September 14th\, 2026 at 6:00 PM (Pacific Time) at 312 Main Street\, Vancouver for a panel discussion\, letter writing\, and community building event.\nThe Salish Sea and Fraser River Estuary are facing unprecedented threats. Over the past year\, sweeping legislative changes mean major projects can now be fast-tracked and approved with minimal environmental oversight or Indigenous consultation. \nToday\, the federal government intends to make a new pipeline one of those projects\, right on the fragile shores of the Fraser River Estuary. A new West Coast Pipeline would destroy vital Chinook salmon habitat\, pollute the Salish Sea with underwater noise\, increase the likelihood of a catastrophic oil spill\, and threaten the long-term health of coastal communities that depend on this ecosystem. It could spell extinction for the Southern Resident killer whales\, too. \nThe Major Projects Office is looking for feedback on whether or not the new West Coast Pipeline should be designated a project of national interest (PONI). If it receives this designation\, the pipeline will proceed to construction before it receives any impact assessment. We have until September 18th to submit our feedback\, which is why we want to gather as community members to learn\, listen\, take action\, and build hope\, together. \nAt this event\, you can expect to learn from a panel of experts\, as they discuss topics about the Salish Sea\, endangered species\, Indigenous rights\, building community resilience\, and major projects like Roberts Bank Terminal 2 and the new proposed pipeline. \nWe’ll provide letters for you to write to the Major Projects Office and members of the federal government that we’ll expedite to Ottawa before the feedback submission deadline. \nThere will be time for snacks\, chatting with organizations about how you can get involved\, and a giveaway for books\, orca pins\, and orca cards at the very end! \nPanelists:\nChief Jim Hornbrook from Hwlitsum First Nation\, Eden Luymes from CPAWS-BC and Candela Cerpa from Stand.earth. \nIt’s a great chance to learn\, connect\, and chat with others who care about our planet. DESCRIPTION:An online discussion about major projects\, extractive industries\, weakened environmental laws\, and what the strategies are for intervening. \n\n\n\nJoin us September 16th\, 2026 at 6:00 PM (Pacific Time) for an online discussion about major projects and extractive industries\, weakened environmental laws\, and what the strategies are for intervening in this moment!Have you felt overwhelmed by new major project announcements and all the changes happening to environmental laws in Canada? \nWe have\, too. \nThe rapid-fire West Coast pipeline and Roberts Bank Terminal 2 announcements\, along with the sweeping changes to law and environmental regulations\, have all happened so fast\, with little time to sort through all the information and make sense of it. \nThe current push to fast-track and streamline extractive projects is in line with a long history of government support for extractive activities. But this time feels different. \nThat’s why we’ve organized this webinar to discuss this new landscape\, and what these developments mean for Indigenous rights\, environmental protections\, and democratic decision-making. Featuring a panel of experts\, we’ll examine why and how governments are advancing major extractive projects in this new legal and political environment\, and\, importantly\, discuss ways communities can respond and take action. \nAbout the speakers: \nDr. Rosemary Collard and Dr. Jess Dempsey are economic geographers and political ecologists at Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia respectively. Together\, they run the Extinction Paradox research program\, which studies the political economy of environmental change and looks to identify the political economic drivers of extinction and loss of wild animal abundance. \nGeorgia Lloyd-Smith is a staff lawyer and Marine Program Lead at West Coast Environmental Law. She works to protect coastal and ocean spaces and believes in the power of the ocean to heal itself.
