SUMMARY:Book Launch & Discussion "Listening Once Again to Our Great Mother: The Fairy Creek Blockades and the Life Story of Pacheedaht Elder Bill Jones."
DESCRIPTION:Join Elder Bill Jones\, spiritual leader of the Rainforest Flying Squad and the Old-Growth Forest Protectors\, and co-author Karen Moe for the launch of their book Listening Once Again to Our Great Mother: The Fairy Creek Blockades and the Life Story of Pacheedaht Elder Bill Jones (Dundurn Press\, 2026) followed by a discussion and book-signing on September 22nd\, 2026 at the Saltspring Island Public Library\, 129 McPhillips Ave\, Saltspring Island BC. \n“With the masterful insight and skill of Karen Moe\, Elder Bill Jones breaks our hearts open with his deeply personal expose of the ongoing trauma inflicted on Indigenous people and their beautiful ancestral forests by colonial capitalism in Canada.”\n-Suzanne Simard author of When the Forest Breathes. \n“The teachings of Elder Bill are inspirational. This is myth\, legend\, theology and philosophy. It is the essential teaching for our time.”\n-Elizabeth May\, O.C.\, M.P \n“I was lost before I was born”: the starting point of Pacheedaht Elder Bill Jones’ lifelong journey of decolonization. “You were all Indigenous once”: the starting point for ending a world based on exploitation and greed. \nAt Port Renfrew\, British Columbia\, in 2020\, both settlers and First Nations experienced a re-indigenization and became reacquainted with our Great Mother during the fight to save some of the last remaining old growth forest at the Fairy Creek Blockades. As Elder Bill sat in a tent during a West Coast storm at the height of the protests\, he experienced the final phase of his personal decolonization\, his absolute re-indigenization\, when he realized: “I know what happened!”\, a revelation that has informed his life ever since. \nCombining the story of Elder Bill’s personal life and ancestors\, elder wisdom\, settler feminism\, and the inspirational story of the Fairy Creek Blockades — the largest act of civil disobedience in Canada — Listening Once Again to Our Great Mother is wisdom weaving to motivate those towards their own self-awakening\, even after Elder Bill is gone. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Repair Cafe West Shore and Holiday Decor Swap and Shop
DESCRIPTION:What do you do with a broken toaster or a sweater full of moth holes? Toss it? No way! Bring them to the Repair Cafe\, where our fantastic volunteer repair team can assess and more than likely help you get your item repaired for free or by donation. And you can grab a tasty free snack and chat with other folks while you wait! \nSpecial Notes: We DO NOT accept gas-powered items (for repair or the swap and shop). We also ask that you make sure your item(s) are wiped down/cleaned before requesting a repair (we don’t want our repair heroes needing to clean out dirty vacuums before they can try to repair them for you). \nGot the tools and some time?\nIf you’re a Handy Superhero like our mascot Reggie the Wrench Guy\, we’d love to have you join our righteous repair quest. Repair Cafe ReImagine West Shore could use more handy volunteers and we’re looking for local residents with different skills who can serve as repair experts during our Repair Cafe meetings. Check out our Call to Handyfolk and let us know if you can lend us a hand at an upcoming Repair Cafe! \nHoliday Decor Swap and Shop\nThis Repair Cafe is paired with a Holiday Decor Swap and Shop where folks can bring their Fall and Winter holiday decorations that are clean and still in good working order\, and looking for new homes. Folks can drop-off their donations at Gordon United Church ahead of the Swap and Shop from Wednesday to Friday\, September 23-25\, from 10am to 2:30pm. Thank you to our good friends at Gordon United for kindly making this drop-off opportunity possible. \nWebsite: https://go.evvnt.com/3780160-0?pid=10320 \nDate and Time: On Sat\, 26 Sep 2026 11:00 – Sat\, 26 Sep 2026 15:00 \nVenue Details: Gordon United Church\, 935 Goldstream Avenue\, Victoria\, British Columbia\, V9B 2Y2\, Canada \nCategory: Community | Local / Community

SUMMARY:Arno Kopecky - Mark Carney and the Climate Crisis: What Went Wrong?
DESCRIPTION:ArtSpring 7:30PM Saturday\nSeptember 26th\n\nTickets available HERE\n\nCan we take meaningful action on climate change without damaging our economy? \nPrime Minister Mark Carney’s current policies seem to represent a major pivot from his earlier\, pre-political concerns about climate change. While he previously championed strict regulations\, carbon taxes\, and mandated phase-outs globally\, his government’s new strategy—outlined in his “Forward Guidance” framework—deliberately prioritizes economic affordability\, national unity\, and energy expansion. \nFor more than two decades\, journalist and author Arno Kopecky has examined the difficult trade-offs that define our relationship with nature.  Kopecky has travelled the globe reporting from the front lines of environmental change\, asking uncomfortable questions about conservation\, climate change\, Indigenous rights\, and energy. Rather than offering easy answers\, he challenges us to think more deeply about what it really means to live sustainably. \nArno Kopecky is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in The Globe and Mail\, Maclean’s\, The Guardian\, The Narwhal\, The Tyee\, and many other publications.  In June\, he won a 2026 National Magazine Award for\, “A Son\, a Scientist\, and the Secret of Bioluminescence” published in The Walrus.  His acclaimed books\, The Environmentalist’s Dilemma (ECW Press\, 2021\, available at Salt Spring Books) and The Oil Man and the Sea (Douglas & McIntyre\, 2013) blend vivid storytelling\, investigative reporting and personal experience to explore some of today’s urgent environmental debates. \nPlease join the Salt Spring Forum in welcoming Arno Kopecky for the 2nd annual Derek Lundy Memorial Event\, where we will discuss the complex political and ethical dilemmas raised by a global ecological crisis. \nTickets are also available HERE for Joanna Cheek\, ‘Mental Health for Us All’.  ArtSpring 3:00 Sunday October 18. \nPlease visit the Forum website to preview and purchase tickets for our upcoming events.\nThe Salt Spring Forum is grateful for the sponsorship provided by Ganges Village Marketplace and Island Savings and for the continued support of Harbour House Hotel\, Auntie Pesto’s\, Harbour Air and Salt Spring Books.

SUMMARY:AN EVENING OF MUSIC AND LAUGHTER
DESCRIPTION:A Pay What You Want Community Concert\nwith award-winning singer/songwriter Amy Bishop\n\nAmy Bishop’s voice is a combination of smooth pavement and rough gravel\, with the ability to charm listeners with her sweet tones; yet stun audiences with the ability to hit any high note.\n\nHailing from Calgary\, Amy began her music career around campfires\, at block parties\, and in church choir. Knowing a career in music is no guarantee\, Amy decided to practice other trades\, but her passion for music prevailed\, leading her to collaborations with Moby and opening for April Wine\, Farmer’s Daughter\, and Chris Cummings. Amy has an instinctive ability to craft stories into song and deliver them with sincerity and passion\, all qualities that make her an undeniable Canadian talent.\n\n \nAmy “wowed” Canada with her appearance on CTV “The Launch” in 2018. This opened up industry doors as she was quickly signed by both a booking agency and management company.  In March 2019 Amy performed at the prestigious Canadian Screen Awards in Toronto. \n

SUMMARY:Murder Most Foul
DESCRIPTION:We often look back at the past as a time free of crime\, where everyone went about their days in safety. This rosy view will be clouded by today’s tour. A team of storytellers will take us to graves of murderers and their victims and tell the grisly tales found in coroners’ files\, old newspapers and through interviews with family members. As the TV shows say\, viewer discretion is advised.

SUMMARY:Hands Off Old Growth! - Rally Oct. 4th
DESCRIPTION:Old growth forests continue to be logged at a breathtaking rate. Our group\, Elders for Ancient Trees\, and the other environmental organizations involved in the United We Stand movement\, have continued to keep up the pressure on government. We have rallied\, visited MLA offices\, written letters\, sung carols (with forest-related lyrics) outside Ravi Parmar’s office. Last November\, we helped to organize the Broken Promises rally\, which highlighted the many promises made by the NDP government concerning old growth protection\, none of which have been kept. Thirteen communities\, right across BC\, participated\, supported by shared materials to help them organize successful events. \nNow it’s time for renewed pressure on the government. Currently\, old growth forests are more under threat than ever. Every day\, roughly 100 soccer fields of old growth are logged\, including areas identified for deferral. That’s over 25\,000 hectares per year\, more than twice the size of Vancouver! As we all know\, once these ancient forest ecosystems are gone\, they’re gone forever. \nThis is why we’re now planning a rally at the BC legislature on October 4\, the day before parliament opens. This rally will be echoed in communities across BC\, from Vancouver Island to Nelson. Each community can decide on their own formats\, but they will be supported by materials developed in Victoria that they can adapt for their own use. \nBC Legislature lawn\, Victoria \nOctober 4\, 1:00–3:00 PM \nSpeakers\, live music\, and a giant “Hands Off” canvas where you can trace your hand
