DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Simon Donner will discuss the latest climate data\, the solutions to climate change\, and how we find the courage to take action. Simon Donner is a Professor and interdisciplinary climate scientist at the University of British Columbia and Director of the university’s Climate Solutions Research Collective. He was a lead author on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s most recent assessment and also Co-Chair of Canada’s Net-Zero Advisory Body\, which advises the federal government on pathways to eliminating climate-warming emissions\, until he resigned late last year. In the second webinar in our series “When energy gets closer to home\,” Re.Climate takes a deeper look at energy conversations happening at the kitchen table\, when homeowners decide whether—and how—to make their homes more comfortable\, affordable and resilient. \nThe challenge is\, home energy upgrades can be confusing\, costly and highly personal. Many people want practical information from someone they can relate to: a neighbour who has been through the process\, a contractor with hands-on experience\, or a local organization they trust. \nRe.Climate\, The Regional Municipality of Durham and Windfall Ecology Centre tested what it takes to turn that insight into action. SUMMARY:Restoring the Balance: A Pattern Language for Future Ecologies
DESCRIPTION:n the 1970s\, a group of architects published a remarkable book called A Pattern Language\, in which they crafted a set of principles to govern the design of human infrastructure from the scale of doorknobs up to metropolitan regions\, drawing on careful study of patterns in successful human design throughout history. In the 1980s\, permaculture emerged as an attempt to articulate a similar set of principles for agriculture and the design of human-centered ecologies. \nThis raises the question: what would it look like to articulate a “pattern language” for the design of natural systems themselves—a set of principles and practices for ecological restoration based on observation of natural patterns? And what would it look like to apply those patterns to the landscape around us\, degraded as they have been by over a century of extractive colonial mismanagement? In this talk\, we open up the restoration practitioner’s toolbox and apply it at a landscape scale to see what patterns might emerge.

SUMMARY:Ecosystems of Care: A Solastalgia poetry and prose workshop
DESCRIPTION:What sustains us through times of change\, when the ground beneath our feet seems strange and unreal? \nSolastalgia describes the distress we feel when “home” doesn’t feel like home anymore\, a sense of homesickness one feels when the places we live start changing around us. \nOur lives are intricately woven into the places we inhabit\, the communities we belong to\, and the living\, breathing world around us. As climate change transforms these relationships\, how do we continue to care for one another\, foster belonging\, and build a just future together? \nJoin GSA and RAVEN for Ecosystems of Care: A Solastalgia poetry and prose workshop\, a creative workshop exploring our relationships with place\, climate change\, grief\, belonging\, and collective care. \nThrough guided writing prompts\, reflections\, and discussion\, we’ll explore how care flows between people\, place\, our more-than-human kin\, and the communities we build\, including the world we’ll leave for future generations. Together\, we’ll reflect on the relationships that sustain us\, what needs protecting and nourishing\, and how creativity can help us imagine new possibilities for our communities and the places we call home. \nNo writing experience is needed! Just bring yourself\, your curiosity\, and a willingness to reflect. \n<><><> \nBuilding resilience through care and collective power \nThis is the second event in our Climate Justice Dialogue Series: Building Community Resilience for the Times Ahead. This gathering explores an essential dimension of climate resilience: the relationships and practices that help communities navigate change\, build solidarity\, and shape their own futures. \nWeathering disruption is an essential part of resilience. But to get there\, we need to build real\, sometimes messy\, sometimes amazing ecosystems of care. This is foundational to ensuring that communities have a voice in decisions that affect them\, and is a major step along the way to building the collective power required to create more just and livable futures. \nWe don’t have to face uncertainty alone. By making space for creativity\, connection\, and shared reflection\, we can nurture the ecosystems of care that sustain us\, and strengthen our capacity to shape what comes next.
