DESCRIPTION:An online discussion about major projects\, extractive industries\, weakened environmental laws\, and what the strategies are for intervening. \n\n\n\nJoin us September 16th\, 2026 at 6:00 PM (Pacific Time) for an online discussion about major projects and extractive industries\, weakened environmental laws\, and what the strategies are for intervening in this moment!Have you felt overwhelmed by new major project announcements and all the changes happening to environmental laws in Canada? \nWe have\, too. \nThe rapid-fire West Coast pipeline and Roberts Bank Terminal 2 announcements\, along with the sweeping changes to law and environmental regulations\, have all happened so fast\, with little time to sort through all the information and make sense of it. \nThe current push to fast-track and streamline extractive projects is in line with a long history of government support for extractive activities. But this time feels different. \nThat’s why we’ve organized this webinar to discuss this new landscape\, and what these developments mean for Indigenous rights\, environmental protections\, and democratic decision-making. Featuring a panel of experts\, we’ll examine why and how governments are advancing major extractive projects in this new legal and political environment\, and\, importantly\, discuss ways communities can respond and take action. \nAbout the speakers: \nDr. Rosemary Collard and Dr. Jess Dempsey are economic geographers and political ecologists at Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia respectively. Together\, they run the Extinction Paradox research program\, which studies the political economy of environmental change and looks to identify the political economic drivers of extinction and loss of wild animal abundance. \nGeorgia Lloyd-Smith is a staff lawyer and Marine Program Lead at West Coast Environmental Law. She works to protect coastal and ocean spaces and believes in the power of the ocean to heal itself.
