If you appreciate Saanich’s new active transportation infrastructure and want the network completed, please make sure you get out and vote on October 17, 2026.
The District of Saanich, has been building much-need active transportation (AT) infrastructure, improving the safety and convenience of trips by bike, on foot, or by transit. In the 2024 Report Card, Saanich reported that vehicle-involved cyclist and pedestrian crashes decreased for the 7th year in a row, illustrating the positive impact of building safer AT infrastructure. The number of trips taken by bike are not insignificant – in 2022 the number of bikes auto-counted on McKenzie near Larchwood was 181,670 – this increased by 28,338 to 210,008 in 2025. AT infrastructure benefits all of us – it makes our trips safer and more affordable, improves our health, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
However, this critical work is incomplete – Saanich’s Active Transportation Plan and Report Cards shows AT projects ‘in progress, slated for completion over the short term (by 2030), medium-term (by 2040), or long-term (by 2050). Consequently, the choices we make on Saturday October 17, in our next municipal election, will significantly impact whether or not this much-needed progress continues toward completion, or stalls.
If we want work on AT infrastructure across Saanich to continue, we need to elect mayoral and council candidates on October 17 who support continuing improvements in cycling, transit, and pedestrian infrastructure.
Please, take the time to vote thoughtfully in the upcoming municipal elections – the outcomes of our choices greatly impact our day-to-day lives.
