National Seniors Day Rally for Climate Action

“Seniors for Climate”, a coalition of six national advocacy groups, has requested that Canadian seniors join them in a National Day of Action on Canada’s National Seniors Day – October 1st. We are a grassroots group of seniors from the Greater Victoria region (S4CVictoria) responding to this request by organizing a “happening” at the BC Legislature.

We plan a rally that will have speakers explaining the connection between our “unnatural disasters” (heat domes, forest fires, droughts) and the increasing levels of CO2 in the atmosphere due to the burning of fossil fuels. We plan to have information booths from various local environmental groups, as well as music and art. Although organized by seniors, all ages are welcome and children will be incorporated into our ceremonies. First Nations elders will be invited to join us in both planning and participating in the event.

Our goal is to recognize and celebrate the seniors in our community who are concerned about the future generations. We are calling for emergency action at all levels of government and a energy transition away from fossil fuels and towards a carbon free sustainable economy. We will specifically be demanding an end to subsidies to fossil fuel industries.

Numbers are important to politicians, so we ask all concerned seniors, friends and family to take two hours out of a lifetime to turn up at the Legislature on Oct 1st and let the government know we need to act, and we need to act NOW!
