Central Saanich United Church is opening a new gathering place for family and community celebrations, along with cultural and educational events.
Central Saanich United Church (formerly Shady Creek United) was founded in 1862 by Black pioneers who came to Victoria at the invitation of Governor James Douglas. They built an early church, which was destroyed by fire, and then a second church in 1895, which houses the current sanctuary. This is a nationally recognized heritage site. A new addition behind the church offers a large multi-purpose room and commercial kitchen and will enable the church to host a variety of educational, social and cultural events.
An OPEN HOUSE for the public will take place on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2024 FROM 12:30 TO 3:00. p.m. There will be an opportunity to see the new space, the heritage sanctuary, and take a tour of the historic Shady Creek Cemetery, which adjoins the church property. A descendant of the Alexander family, which founded the church, will be onsite to conduct tours and answer questions.
A FORMAL DEDICATION of the new space will take place on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6, at !:30 p.m.
