Asian Heritage Month started on May 1 and “ends” on May 31 (although it is important to think about Asian history every day of the year). It has been celebrated in so-called Canada since the 1990s!
The theme for 2023 is “stories of determination” – pointing out the perseverance that Asians in so-called Canada have exhibited since they arrived, facing discrimination and exclusion, working towards a better future for their families and future generations
In addition to learning about the history of Asians and Asian discrimination in so-called Canada, there is more to the story. I encourage you to ask why Asians felt like they had to leave their homelands, put up with discrimination, and how this may have intergenerational impacts. As a member of the Asian diaspora, these are questions I continue to ask myself that are helping me to better understand where I came from and what I want to do for my community to address injustices towards Asians that are still going on
