Do celebrations such as birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries immediately turn your thoughts to the need to buy a gift or hand-out a wish list? As my 70th birthday approached in the spring of 2019, I started looking for a gift idea that would benefit our Mother Earth. I hit on the idea of asking for donations to buy 70 native trees and planting them as part of my birthday party. This idea avoided my receiving more stuff that I don’t need and added trees and shrubs to help our Earth breathe better.
A few months later, I found myself getting married, and my fiance and I decided to ask for donations to plant nut trees at O.U.R. Eco-village at Shawnigan Lake (https://ourecovillage.org/) and fruit trees in Uganda. These two events were so successful that we created a website Celebrate with Trees (http://www. celebratewithtrees.com/) to inspire others to hold similar planting parties. On the website, you will find full details of our events and tips for holding similar events. We also have a Facebook group, where you may share your stories of celebrating with trees.
