Here is a petition submitted by New Brunswick Green MP, Jenica Atwin, for the federal government to declare its support for an amendment to the Rome Statute to include ecocide as a crime (alongside war crimes, genocide, crimes against humanity, the crime of aggression). Having international ecocide laws would hold not only business accountable, but also government. France is leading on this.
Here is more information on ecocide law.
Climate change is here. As I write, those of us living in the Lower Mainland of BC can see it in front of our eyes, smell it on our skin, and feel it in our lungs from the devastating wildfires from the western states of the US. Australians felt it earlier this year with catastrophic bushfires. And multiple countries in Asia have experienced floods that have left their homes, land, and crops devastated. Canada just lost her last fully intact arctic ice shelf. We cannot keep gasping about “unprecedented” or “once-in-a-lifetime” events that are coming thick, fast, and with increasing ferocity. Scientists are clear that this is anthropogenic climate change and we have to act now. Our lawmakers have thus far failed to lead and so, only by having laws that hold them and business accountable, will change be made.
We have the potential to push for system change by this small act of signing our name to a petition.
I hope that you will be able to find the two minutes it takes to sign this. And if you have an extra 5 minutes please do consider forwarding to every Canadian who you think will be interested in signing and putting it on your social media pages.
