WE-CAN Lunch ‘n Learn: Eriel Tchekwie Deranger, 2024 Climate Breakthrough Award Winner

Yea! WE-CAN is privileged to host Eriel Tchekwie Deranger, who was selected into the Climate Breakthrough Award program in 2024 with a $4 million grant to fulfil her project.

Eriel wants to launch a globally coordinated effort that will allow for the effective and resourced participation of Indigenous peoples all around the world in bringing forward climate solutions.
Despite the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 2007, Eriel is acutely aware that Indigenous peoples continue to be sidelined in global negotiations and decision-making processes.

Indigenous-led climate solutions are undervalued and underrepresented. Eriel’s initiative seeks to overcome the barriers to these solutions, including enduring systems of colonization, inadequate funding, insufficient training opportunities led by and for Indigenous people, and a lack of direct information to communities.
