Help Advance the New Forest Act – A Training Workshop
Jennifer Houghton, Campaign Director, of The New Forest Act Project will host a free online training workshop for people who want to help advance the New Forest Act at 6 pm (PST), Tuesday, October 13th.
Government knows about the New Forest Act. Now we need more people helping to advance it.
The NFA is not asking government for another program, planning process, or new terminology for the existing forestry system. It calls for replacement of BC’s existing forestry laws with a new legal framework that puts ecological functioning, community decision-making, and stable local economies into law.
That difference is important now that the province is promoting its Working Forest Landscape Model and three-zone approach. It may sound similar to the NFA’s Protect–Restore–Harvest framework, but the underlying systems are very different.
This workshop will cover:
- what the New Forest Act proposes and why the changes need to be in law;
- how Protect–Restore–Harvest differs from the government’s three-zone approach;
- key questions government has asked about the proposal;
- how to explain the NFA clearly without having to become a forestry expert;
- how to take the proposal to MLAs, local governments, organizations, and other decision-makers; and
- practical resources people can use to help build support.
Retired forester and NFA co-author Dave Weaver will talk about what Protect–Restore–Harvest means on the ground and will be available to answer technical questions.
