Saltwater Tongues

As part of our exciting lineup of Ocean Week events, we’re thrilled to invite you to our Saltwater Tongues event series, a creative community gathering where poetry meets environmental justice. Last year, we heard stunning poems about marine mammals, bull kelp, and the deep pull of the ocean, along with many other profound stories.
Join us Saturday, June 6th, at Caffe Fantastico (Quadra Village) for an evening that welcomes everyone to listen, share, and speak into being more just and resilient futures.
This year, we want to hone in on how climate intersects with the Salish Sea and what it means to live on the shores in times of change.
We’re also co-hosting this event with the Gorge Waterway Action Society, the BC Climate Emergency Campaign, and the University of Victoria Sustainability Project.
We think its important to work together to make change in the communities we live in, and by bringing together all of these rad orgs, we make space for pathways to action that everyone can participate in. We’ll have a Community Action table that people can engage with, and we’ll have lots of opportunity to chat about poetry, change-making, and how we can build community in times of precarity.
Importantly, we want this to be a fun and accessible space. Bring your own words, the words of others, or any form of creative expression that moves you. Whether you’re sharing or simply soaking it in, this night is about connecting through art, transformation, and community care. It will provide a space to reflect on how resilience moves through both bodies and water.
