Before the recent B.C. election, we gained some considerable local wins and financing for conservation. But recently the people in power are notably silent – and even backstepping – on the issue.
We know that workers and communities are facing the devastating consequences of the cascading mill closures and and new threats to Canada’s economy. Now’s the time to demand that Minister Parmar and his government put communities ahead of the interests of a few big corporations and the billionaires that own them. As old growth forests on stolen Indigenous lands are extracted to near oblivion, industry giants like Canfor can pack up and abandon communities. While Minister Parmar keeps meeting with corporate execs, we need to make sure he hears even more loudly from all of us.
The answer isn’t more old growth logging; it’s to invest in an Indigenous-led just transition to sustainable jobs that will restore land, improve community safety and uphold First Nations Title and Rights. We’ll be inviting them to listen to that vision for the future on March 26th.
Hope to see you there and make you waffles!
