Our world is in a mess. People know things have to change – but how? We are confused, for we have been told a thousand times that capitalism is the only way to run a successful economy. The other way, we are often warned, lies socialism and state tyranny. Capitalism is not an economic system, however. It is a cultural system based on values of selfishness and greed. To change the world, we need to build an economy based on values of cooperation and kindness.

Guy Dauncey is an ecotopian futurist who works to develop a positive vision of a sustainable future, and to translate that vision into action. He is the author ten books, including Journey to the Future: A Better World is Possible, and co-chair of the West Coast Climate Action Network. He lives in Yellow Point. His new book, The Economics of Kindness: Moving from a Selfish Economy to a Cooperative Economy will be published by Palgrave/Macmillan in Summer 2024.
