What Lies Beneath: Pathways Alliance, Greenwashing, Networks, and Narratives

Thursday, May 23 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

What is greenwashing, how can we detect it, and what can be done about it?

May 23, 12:00–1:15 pm ET

Join us on May 23rd as Re.Climate Research Associates Dr. Melissa Aronczyk and Dr. Patrick McCurdy, and Re.Climate Academic Director Dr. Chris Russill tackle fossil fuel greenwashing and its impact on Canada’s climate conversation. They will share findings from their newly published paper, “Greenwashing, Net Zero, and the Oil Sands in Canada: The Case of Pathways Alliance.”

The webinar will focus on the net-zero and climate action claims made by Pathways Alliance, which comprises six oil sand producers that collectively represent 95% of oil sands production.

Through this case study of greenwashing, the panelists will highlight the frames, narratives, and communication techniques Pathways Alliance employs in their dynamic approach to greenwashing. They will offer insights and tools for identifying greenwashing and how communicators can address it. To illustrate these, the panelists will showcase several examples drawn from the oil companies’ net-zero plan, advertising campaigns, and assertions of leadership in climate technology, such as carbon capture and storage.
