Affordability has been a huge concern for Canadians since 2023 with no signs of changing, especially as economic uncertainty grows south of the border. Climate communicators have responded by sharing the story of clean energy technologies—like heat pumps and EVs—and electricity regulations as cost saving measures in an increasingly expensive world.
The problem? It doesn’t seem to be working.
Re.Climate’s next webinar “Is affordability messaging the solution to energy unaffordability?” will feature an in-depth discussion with Jim Stanford, director of the Centre for Future work and Louise Comeau, senior advisor at Re.Climate.The Centre for Future Work and Re.Climate are collaborating to help you understand the root causes of energy unaffordability and to show you how to more effectively communicate opportunities to improve affordability.
According to Jim Stanford’s forthcoming report, Counting the Costs, high prices and profits of the oil and gas industry were the main culprits behind the recent surge in inflation and resulting affordability crisis. He documents the enormous costs of high fossil fuel prices for consumers and workers, and identifies ways to protect them, including transitioning away from fossil fuels.
Louise explores the effectiveness of countering energy unaffordability concerns with affordability messages. Based on multi-year research investigating public perceptions of electrification policies and willingness to engage with energy-efficient technologies like heat pumps and electric vehicles, Louise will introduce Re.Climate’s latest report Building a Social Mandate for Climate Action: A Playbook for Communicating Affordability.
When economics are front and centre in the national discourse, it is time to demonstrate how clean energy and electrification policies can help us all save money and build energy security in a volatile world. You won’t want to miss this powerful discussion.
