Why have a special day to celebrate and care for the Earth? Shouldn’t we do that every day?

Well, as organizers of the first Earth Day in 1970 realized, it’s an opportunity to raise awareness about climate issues, get on the political agenda, and create momentum for change.

This April 22, we’re not going to be able to show up for rallies in parks, mass tree plantings, river cleanups or street marches. But we can put the meaning back into Earth Day by calling on decision-makers to be accountable for their promises. Find quick and easy ideas on our action of the month page. Here are a few more:

Tell federal leaders to strengthen Bill C-12, Canada’s Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, which is being debated right now.

Let Canada’s big five banks know you won’t give them any business unless they stop investing in fossil fuels.

Ask your local municipality what they’re doing about the Climate Emergency declarations they made a year or more ago. If they haven’t yet declared a climate emergency in your community, ask why.

Whatever you do, share your messages in a photo or video on whatever social platform you use, and share them with us so we can capture the action across the country on Earth Day.
