The Tongass National Forest in Alaska is the largest National Forest in North America.

It covers nearly 17 million acres and makes up a significant part of the world’s temperate forests.

I’m reaching out to share a documentary project that needs support.

The Tongass National Forest is located in Alaska USA.  Its forests are a crucially important northern component of the Cascadia Bioregion, which we are a part of, and it needs our help.

Preservation of the remaining Old Growth habitat is crucial to the survival of the planet we live on and its presence affects every one of us, wherever we reside.

Land Less is an independent documentary film following Indigenous and frontline forest defenders confronting the privatization of the Tongass National Forest — the last intact temperate rainforest in the world.

The film is being produced with care, and integrity, by a small, committed team: award-winning director Alexi Liotti (Rematriation), producer/researcher Joshua Wright (Eden’s Last Chance) and producer/engagement strategist Valerie Elliott. Joshua and Valerie have fought for the marbled murrelets, which live in the Cascadia region and Coastal Old Growth Forests of British Columbia.

Thanks to early supporters, Land Less has now entered post-production. This phase is critical: editing, sound, color and finishing work will determine how effectively the story reaches audiences, decision-makers, and the public. This documentary film will be a key tool for step two, an action plan for a grassroots movement creating a groundswell of opposition to privatizing National Forests.

The fight to stop privatization has been ongoing since 2014. Indigenous leaders, like Wanda Culp have stood up for decades against privatization efforts. Before President Biden left office, 124 scientists signed a letter opposing the bill. One of them writes about the impact of biodiversity and carbon storage loss due to clearcutting of these forests.

The following link contains the political backstory: https://www.wlfdc.org/the-landless-bill. It shows the different time periods and how privatization schemes have been upcoming for many years.

The total acres at risk is 115,200. Clearcutting has started and appears in the film ‘In a National Forest’, though they are privatizing portions to remove them from the National Forest system. That’s the key issue at stake.

This project matters.  Independent films like this rely on community support rather than institutional funding.

If you feel moved to contribute – donations of any amount are meaningful. Contributions will directly support post-production and help ensure the film can be completed and shared widely. Only $13,500 is needed to complete this film.

It is imperative that the documentary film be completed as soon as possible in February before clear cutting begins again.

Thank you for taking the time to click on the links and for considering support for a project rooted in truth, respect, and responsibility to the land and to future generations.

Could you kindly send this message to your local and global networks….
and especially to your caring friends in the USA. American citizens can support this movement and build momentum to

Stop Privatization of National Forests and Save the Tongass National Forest in Alaska.

Sincerely, for the Old Growth trees and their abundance of threatened biodiversity/dependent WildLife Species
