It was such a disappointment to see the media slant a celebratory good news story into a negative piece of journalism by sensationalizing one council member’s comments.

As community members and volunteers, we can honestly say we are very pleased at how receptive and open Mayor Lisa Helps, most councillors and city staff have been to meet with us to discuss the importance of implementing the Urban Forest Master Plan.

For months we have been working to bring this plan forward with the intention of protecting and preserving our urban tree canopy. This plan, written by urban forest specialists, is a beautifully crafted and well thought out document that shares best practices for stewarding our urban forests.

In our journey, we have come to realize that it will take an integrated approach. In other words, if we want to see our community trees survive and thrive, we must work together. Divided we fall. As will the trees, unless we share some support for this long needed plan and let the city and media know they are doing the right thing to support the Urban Forest Master Plan that was bought, paid for and adopted in 2013.

We finally have a chance to brush the dust off it and get the recommendations into action. Please write a Letter to the Editor, share on social media, and let your support and thanks for the city’s decision to support the Urban Forest Master Plan be known.

“Grown-up politics means accepting the tensions and complexities of our lives together without pretending there are easy solutions, universal rules … That means relearning the habits of complexity against the siren calls of a soundbite, quick-fix culture.” – Jonathan Sacks
