We would be most grateful if you could share the opportunities below with any Indigenous people you know who are engaged in any kind of climate action or initiative.
The West Coast Climate Action Network is a new non-profit society: we work to support and promote the climate action work of 400+ climate action groups, organizations and initiatives in British Columbia. Our interim website is https://bcclimateactionnetwork.wordpress.com
Our member organizations agree that the global climate emergency poses an existential threat to all nature and humanity, and that we need urgent and rapid action to tackle its various causes.
Right from the start, we have made a commitment to engage Indigenous people who share this perspective, and we have six ways in which Indigenous people can contribute to climate action under our umbrella:
1. Our
13-person Board includes two reserved full voting members for self-identified First Nations and Metis people who bring an Indigenous perspective. Our active and engaged Board meets twice a month and requires a varying commitment of time. We are pleased to share that Erin Blondeau has accepted the appointment to one of the seats. To be considered for this second seat, or simply to learn more, please contact our Interim Coordinator, Guy Dauncey at 250-924-1445 or email
guydauncey@earthfuture.com by July 6, 2021.
We are also inviting people who bring an Indigenous perspective:
2: To join our Advisory Panel, which will meet 3 or 4 times a year;
3: To join our Indigenous Engagement Team, which meets bi-weekly;
4: To join any of our other Working Teams;
5: To assist with the planning for our Fall Webinar series on Indigenous Perspectives on Climate Action in BC;
6: To assist with the development of our web-based Inventory of First Nations Climate Actions and Initiatives in BC.
If you are interested in helping with any of this work, please call Guy Dauncey, Interim Coordinator at 250-924-1445 or email guydauncey@earthfuture.com, and we will arrange a Zoom Meeting when we can get together to discuss these opportunities.
With appreciation,
Guy Dauncey, WE-CAN Board Chair, Interim Coordinator
Erin Blondeau, WE-CAN Indigenous Engagement Team and Board Member
