Thank you to Victoria Council (technically the Committee of the Whole) for approving $1.26 million in new funding for our urban forest, in addition to the $110K already approved to update the 2005 Tree Protection Bylaw.

Finally, the Urban Forest Master Plan adopted in 2013 will be implemented. We are grateful to everyone who wrote letters and took a stand for our community trees.

The city’s overall tree canopy coverage, when last measured in 2013, was about 18%. The Urban Forest Master Plan recommends increasing this coverage to 40 to 45%, a figure aligned with targets for cities around the world. We have much work to do!

Let’s stay vigilant and involved during the 2019 public consultation about the new bylaw.
