Biochar is a charcoal – like substance derived from thermally processing woody material, sewage sludge and biosolids. Bio-char can be used for a range of uses such a adding nutrients to soil, strengthening asphalt and concrete and storing large amounts of carbon.
The market for biochar is growing by leaps and bounds. We need to encourage the Provincial and Regional governments to speed up the application of technology called pyrolysis to produce biochar.
Currently the CRD is evaluating an number of proposals to construct and operate a demonstration thermal conversion plant for treating all biochar from the waste treatment plants in the Region. This is a unique opportunity to kick start this new technology and create a lucrative product that not only provides a range of uses be eliminates the toxic materials contained in biochar.
