Esquimalt Council adopted a checkout bag bylaw this week. The bylaw will go into effect on August 13, 2021. After this date, there should be no free bags of any kind given by retailers in the municipality. Only paper and reusable bags will be allowed, and the retailer has to charge for their use. In the first six months of the bylaw, paper bags will be 15 cents and reusable bags will be $1. After Feb 13, 2022, the price will rise to 25 cents and $2 for these types of bags.
Thank you to all the former and existing committee members and members of the public who pushed this issue for a long time.
