Evolution of a Healing Prayer to the Universe:

Many people have expressed that the Universe itself is conscious and that the Universe itself is the creative force that created Earth and the life we enjoy as human animals. I have been doing Harmonic Resonance Bodywork healing for about 20 years. This work is multidimensional and not just physical therapy. It is based on the work of Dr. Milton Trager who was also a multidimensional healer. The healing effect itself comes from the Universe which in some cultures is called by the anthropomorphic concept “God”.

Prayer is a useful ritual which has always been associated with healing. Many modern folk of the 21st century have difficulties with an anthropomorphic “God” and have given up on prayer. But prayer is actually well proven to assist the healing process. If there was a prayer which called directly on the life forces of the Universe it would be a powerful tool to assist the healing of people both theists and non-theists.

This little healing prayer has evolved over 20 years to its current form. I originally used a classic Sufi prayer by Hazrat Inayat Khan from the 1920s. Over time, based on feedback from clients of various beliefs a universal prayer evolved that works for people of all faiths and is usually acceptable even to the devout atheist!

** Version of September 2018 **

“Beloved Universe, Divine Presence
Through the rays of the sun
Through the waves of the air
Through the all pervading life in space
Purify and revitalize us
And through our hearts may our bodies, minds and world be Healed”

(Wholistic healers have suggested that the last word be changed from “Healed” to “Whole”)

I welcome people in the healing arts to enjoy the prayer and use it in their work if it appeals to their hearts and helps their clients.

Notes on the Editing of the Original Sufi Prayer by Hazrat Inayat Khan:

“Beloved Lord, Almighty God
Through the rays of the sun
Through the waves of the air
Through the all pervading life in space

Purify and revivify us and we pray
Heal our bodies, hearts and soul.”

The expression “Almighty God” did not fit with the rest of the prayer which described the “life in space” created by the Universe. Atheists and Buddhists who came for healing sessions objected to the expression. I decided to leave the anthropomorphic God concept out of the prayer and see how it felt.

Coming from my own Quaker background the concept of “Presence” is often used to replace the word God. Presence is an experience that comes to people during Quaker or Buddhist silent meditation. This led to the new beginning of the prayer “Beloved Universe, Divine Presence.”

Furthermore Christian, Sufi and Buddhist clients pointed out that neither the emotional heart or the soul need healing. The body, mind and world often do need healing. If the client has actual physical heart issues this is part of the body, so a request for bodily healing is good enough to heal the ailing physical heart.

Many feel that the emotional heart brings real healing so it’s useful to evoke healing through the heart chakra. That explains the beginning of the last line as “And through our hearts”

Thus you can see the interesting process that, over many years, has led to the final version.

(I suffered from a mild case of Asperger’s Syndrome all my life until about four years ago when my heart finally relaxed and opened. Only then did I allow myself to fully accept the revised Sufi prayer. This prayer represents my own healing process … and I am curious how it strikes others who do ritual healing? It has been mostly clients who have suggested the editing. I accepted their wisdom.)
