Canada Proposes stricter regulations for Forever chemicals in drinking water.

PFACs are indestructible chemicals which are ubiquitous in the environment due to their presence in a wide range of household items

The US Protection Agency introduced new regulations this month which effectively ban samples of these chemicals in drinking water sources. Canada currently has no similar regulations, only guidelines but is planning to introduce more stringent regulations later this year.

The CRD has faced criticism from public interest groups concerned with land application of biosolids which contain forever chemicals such as PFASs and micro plastics. The CRD Environmental Services Committee yesterday dismissed a proposal by staff to contract academic researchers from Toronto Metropolitan University for a literature review of current science of impacts of forever chemicals on the environment and public health. The Peninsular Biosolids Coalition demonstrated that these researchers has a bias in supporting land application. The Committee directed staff to identify an unbiased group of researchers preferably from universities in this Province.

The Committee also passed a motion directing staff to identify unbiased legal experts to assess the potential liability of the CRD Board if it approves land application of biosolids in its long term plan.

Both motions will be reviewed by the full CRD Board in May before they are binding.

The CRD Board is also scheduled to review public input to the long term plan for managing biosolids at its May 8 meeting.
