What is Earth Week?

• The first Earth Day, inspired by protests of the 1960s (like those ignited by the book Silent Spring), took place on April 22nd, 1970

• Organized by US Senator Gaylord Nelson, it was envisioned originally as a “national teach-in on the environment”

• Earth Day demonstrations led to the creation of the United States Protection Agency

• Earth Day is now recognized globally, with events happening in 190+ countries over the course of the week surrounding April 22nd

• Yearly events like Fashion Revolution Week now coincide with Earth Day, drawing attention to many different aspects of social and environmental health and their intersections and communities that are often ignored
