In May 2018 the City opened the Fort Street protected bike lanes. Earlier this month, the City completed the all ages and abilities (AAA) multi-use path in Beacon Hill Park. Construction of the Wharf Street and Humboldt Street AAA routes is anticipated to start in the new year after the underground infrastructure upgrades are completed. You can learn more about these projects at www.victoria.ca/cycling

We wanted to provide an update on our latest engagement opportunities related to the proposed 2019 Vancouver Street project.

The City held a number of pop-up information stations last week on Vancouver Street with a goal to connect with different road users and promote the on-line survey and upcoming Open House events. Staff met with over 300 people in three days and generated significant interest in the project. The City has delivered post-cards on the corridor and will be placing advertisements in newspapers and on-line to encourage stakeholders and road users to get involved in the design phases. The feedback collected from residents, businesses, stakeholders and road users during this phase will inform designs that will be shared back with the community in the new year.

We hope to see you at one of our community engagement events next week or stay tuned to hear about more consultation opportunities in early 2019!

Vancouver Street is an important north-south connection for pedestrians and cyclists and has been prioritized for 2019 capital improvements. These “complete street” investments represent an important strategy to improve road safety, affordability, demonstrate climate leadership, and support economic development efforts.

Once complete, this corridor will connect the Humboldt, Fort and Pandora All Ages and Abilities (AAA) cycling routes and provide access to a number of parks, schools, residents and employment destinations. The project is designed to support active transportation while maintaining access for motor vehicle traffic, including transit, emergency and commercial vehicles.

The 2019 Vancouver Street project (Bay Street to Park Boulevard) is likely to include:

  • Traffic calming and road paving
  • Pedestrian crossing upgrades
  • Landscape enhancements
  • Intersection modifications
  • Modifications to on-street parking and loading
  • Protected bike lanes in the downtown core

STATUS: Outreach to businesses and residents on Vancouver Street is currently underway. The City is interested in hearing from as many people as possible, particularly those who live, work, learn, and travel on Vancouver Street. Throughout the month of November and December there will be opportunities for the public to learn more about the objectives for the project and provide feedback on different infrastructure design treatments and considerations. In January 2019 the consultation program will continue with sharing what has been heard to date and to gather input on a preferred design concept, prior to providing a report back to Council.
